Angry Indian Goddesses: Interview with Pan Nalin

There’s been discussions about the original cut’s fate with the Indian Censor Board, has that affected much of the flow of the film?

It is sad and painful to mute and blur any part of the movie, for which we have worked so hard. We have spent weeks behind each second for the film to look great. Also fail to see the logic in muting words like “Indian Figure,” “Lunch” or “Sarkar.” But AIG’s feminine force is so powerful that they can mute some words here and there, but they can not mute the voice of modern Indian women!

And AIG is that voice and the impact is totally intact!

Does the decision of the Censor Board affect the cut that will be released on DVD/Bluray? Or will the fans have to wait for the home release by Mongrel Media to see the original release?

Fans have to wait for the digital space. We have already released a video today on Facebook showing few of the censor board mutes and blurs.

Oh, gee~ they censored “Lunch.” LUNCH. Heh.

You’ve talked about your next feature, which is the first co-production between India and New Zealand— how do you see the industry’s development with these type of projects?

Yes. I am completing a first India-New Zealand co-production titled Beyond the Known World; it is a spiritual thriller set in Manali, Parvati Valley, Lahaul and Spiti. The shooting is over and I’m currently in post-production in New Zealand. However, the Indian film industry as of today is not at all ready for such co-productions because it’s still totally being driven by stars and not content.

Besides, the industry enjoys strong domestic viewership, however, most of our films are non-exportable beyond the Indian Diaspora.

Non-diaspora fan here! Peru (and Latin America) has a relative ardent non-Indian diaspora who are big fans of mainstream Bollywood, actually, I wouldn’t doubt that certain entertainers (like Akshay’s action thrillers) with proper publicity would get a certain amount of public. It’ll be a long distribution road, though.

I am super thrilled that the Angry Indian Goddesses will be released throughout Latin America and sixty other countries, however the marketing and media is not in my hand, it still remains a distributors call.

Well, that’s all the time we’ve got~ Much success on the post process for Beyond the Known World!

Thank you. Cheers!

[…] EROSNOW has released the trailer of Hansal Mehta’s Aligarh after it, apparently, was given an A Certificate (for adult audiences) by the Indian Censor Board [1], despite the fact that there’s no intimate scenes during the film. As far as I know, the Indian Censor Board — as with most content rating organizations — can be asinine with their standards. But is anyone surprised? [1][2] […]
