Interview: Jamie McGonnigal

Are there any programs for young LGBT kids to go to for support?

Yes, there are lots of local organizations and, of course, the Trevor Project, which helps kids in need. They can always be reached at 1-866 4-U-TREVOR. They do excellent work and they’re closely linked with the It Gets Better Project.

The most important thing for kids growing up LGBT is that you’re not alone and there are millions of kids out there who are just like you, who are experiencing the same things you are. There’s nothing wrong with you. It’s not easy, but there’s always someone out there that is there to help when you need it. You just have to look sometimes.

Outside of your acting career and being an activist, is there anything we can see you doing?

Nothing you can really “see” me doing… unless you stalk me, which would be creepy and awkward. I suppose you could see me walking my awesome dog or going on vacation with my amazing fiancé, Sean, but again… that would be creepy. I do attend conventions now and then and I’m always open to attending when I get invited (hint, hint). So I’d love to see some fans at cons when I can go… and then you’re seeing me in an appropriate manner. ;) I suppose this question is about other things I enjoy doing, so I’ll say I like photography a lot and have a website – equalityphotography. I really like playing board games with friends. My current favorites are Settlers of Catan and Last Night on Earth (a really cool zombie board game).

Where can those who want to know more about you find out where you are? Twitter or Facebook?

On Twitter, you can follow me @mcbenefit and my blog’s Twitter is @talkaboutequality. I have a few Facebook pages. One of them is maxed out, so look for the one that’s the page and not the person. I post there frequently as well.

Thank you so much for doing the interview.

A writer at heart and a all around book nerd. I read everything and anything to educate myself. I have my likes and dislikes but those would never occur if I never branched out and read something different. I would like others to go out on a limb with me and look into differences. I'm loud, half black/Italian. I live with a very weird family. I love my nephew to death. I work too much, think too much and talk too much. I have bad grammar which needs your forgiveness. I'm a gamer, anime convention go-er, and sometimes trouble maker to my best friend.
