Why I No Longer Care About Harry Potter

4. The Fanfiction

I’m not really talking about the unmentionables here even though the Dumbledore controversy did open many doors of opportunity. I’m talking about the really terrible sappy stories about the children of the main characters and preludes to certain relationships (ex. Snape, Lily, and James). There’s a reason why we don’t have any extra information about those things and it’s probably a good one. Judging by the quality of these fan fictions, I don’t think that the issue is entirely debatable. I’d post an example but that would just be evil.

5. A Sacred Thing

I really don’t think that a large amount of the fanbase understands what constant exposure to the elements of the series can do. See, if I have to see a gif of Ron and Hermione kissing everyday on my Tumblr dashboard I’m probably not going to think much of the scene when I finally watch the movie again (if I ever do). Seeing your face superimposed onto Emma Watson’s on the red carpet while she’s being hugged by Daniel Radcliffe is definitely going to sour the moment for me. Think about it. They’re ruining it for everyone because you can’t turn it down. French fries taste better after you’ve been avoiding them for months while on a diet. I officially could care less about Rupert Grint’s next career move because you’ve cemented the image of the same grimace from the second film in my brain for the rest of eternity.

6. Misperception

The the thing that I hear the most often is that the release of the second part of the seventh movie was the ‘end of childhood’. You know, that’s wrong. Why? Because the books are still here. Your older relatives didn’t throw themselves off of a bridge when 1984 came out as a film. Since when were the move adaptations the commencement of enjoyment? On top of that, Harry Potter continues all over the place. It’s a theme park, it’s some type of online mmorpg thing, and I mean, if you really need something, the fanfictions exist. *shudder*

Because of all of this, I can’t be phased by anything Harry Potter related. It saddens me sometimes but I’m usually more annoyed because all of this rubbish continues to happen. So, I’ve gotten over the possibility of offending my Harry Potter loving comrades because, at this point, I’m beginning to think that my sensibilities are more important. The Harry Potter portion of my childhood has been soiled forever. Call me a quitter for letting the annoyances get the best of me but I can’t say that my life’s gotten any worse since I left the fan club for good. Then again, maybe I’m just the Grinch in university student’s clothing.
