The Only Film I Want to Watch in Re-released 3D is…

The Matrix.

Nuff said.

Not The Matrix Reloaded nor The Matrix Revolutions — just The Matrix.

People that know me know that there’s nothing I hate about the business more than money-grabbing re-releases — not for the nostalgia or even celebrating an anniversary… just plain and simple money-grabbing, be it re-releases of music albums with one extra song in different editions around the world or home releases of movies and/or television shows that get released with one extra feature…

Then there’s the theatrical re-releases…

Avatar was the WORST, of course. They didn’t even make us wait a little while for it — though, I do blame myself a little because I was one of those saying “It’s one of those movies you gotta watch at the theater.” So… sorry for that guys.

Then, with the success of anything with the 3D tag and then 3D conversion… well, we’re screwed. Because it seems Hollywood — though, Japan is not avoiding my accusing finger for the re-release of Battle Royale — is intent in re-releasing any major hit they ever had in their history in freaking 3D.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they announced Gone with the Wind, the Wizard of Oz or Casablanca in 3D. That wouldn’t surprise me at all. AT ALL.

I giggled at the idea of Titanic 3D, mainly because I just can’t stop thinking about Titanic: The Motion Picture with Kate Winslot and Leonardo DaVinci [1][2][3], but also because there is no way I would pay even more than a regular price to sit through 3hrs. of my life to watch Titanic, that has one scene of the ship sinking that’s worth the 3D.

Then there was The Lion King, and I LOVE The Lion King. I just don’t think 2D animation is suited for 3D conversion. Disney, sometimes you can be the worst!

And then… there’s The Matrix. Every time I’ve watch that film in Bluray, I keep thinking “Man, this would look amazing in 3D.”  It isn’t only the flying and the fighting. Some of those scenes are made for 3D. The shots of the building from the top as Neo is trying to escape the agents, the shards of window spilling on the side of the screen…

There’s also a lot of point of view shots in the film to warrant an immersive experience, even much more enthralling than in something like Avatar. Then there’s also that glorious bullet scene where every piece of column is torn apart little by little.

But that’s it. I would only pay for The Matrix. I would take my friends and probably watch it again with someone else, but only for The Matrix. If they plan to do it with the rest of the movies, I won’t be there.

What do you think?

Any other film you would pay for in a 3D re-release?

    Now you’ve made me want to watch THE MATRIX in 3D… but yeah, I get the feeling. I almost didn’t watch THE LION KING in 3D because yeah, I didn’t think it would be worth it… but damn it’s freaking THE LION KING which is one of my fav Disney Movies… so thank god I had friends who also wanted to watch it because otherwise I’d say “I pass”. I am not sure I’ll watch BEAUTY AND THE BEAST though… or TITANIC or STAR WARS… depends on how much money I have to spare at the time and if I find someone willing to also spend their money on them with me XD

      @Mirella, How was the 3D in The Lion King?

      Something like Mary and Max would be interesting because it’s claymation and it has depth – I still haven’t seen any 3D re-release… not even Nightmare. xD

      Star Wars is going to be weird though. I don’t think there’s enough scenes that work with depth. Even most of the fight scenes are on one plain and no swooping shots. Even in Attack of the Clones with the hyperactive Yoda, it’d be worthless because Yoda is a blur.

      Like watching Goku fight in super high speed. xD

        @amy, It was good because it was THE LION KING on a big screen xD The 3D wasn’t great but it wasn’t bad either. It was just there like a pop-out book :P

  2. I’D LOVE TO SEE THIS IN 3-d!

      @Candice Frederick, I know right?

      The green digital elements throughout the whole film would even be worth that 3D layer, giving it an even more important meaning to the idea of The Matrix.

  3. I’d like to watch Hausu in 3-D.

    You may have convinced me to watch The Matrix on 3D. What are the chances of that actually happening?

    • amy says:

      @Rodrigo, have no idea. I don’t want to go into IMDb boards and get into a metaphysical reading spree at 4.30am. LOL

      But if Hollywood is re-releasing films due to its 3D possibilities, The Matrix is as good as any other movie can be for that conversion. And if someone puts in the time and money for that conversion, it can totally blow people’s minds in the way that “What is real?” question did xD

    I wouldn’t mind seeing The Wizard of Oz 1939 in 3D considering all their backgrounds and props look like pop-up art. It would add to the pop-up book illusion… but maybe I’m alone in that.

    You saw Garo The Movie, right?

    • amy says:

      @ghost, yes I did.

      At parts it reminded me of 3D Sex & Zen – there’s a bit of nudity in Garo, but the dialog might be even cheesier. It’s mostly bad, but with one or two interesting 3D scenes.
