The Journey of a Cassie Part Two – The List

Now, introductions out of the way, on to

#5: Changmin

If I were simply basing this on individual members’ personalities and how they affect me, Changmin may actually be a little higher on the list. But for the sake of creating a list that’s balanced and as fair as I can make it, he had to be at the bottom. That’s not to suggest that the boy’s not talented. However, when put up against his fellow members, he always seemed to fall second or third in one department or another.

From a vocal standpoint, Changmin has an astonishing range. I’d place him at about mid-tenor to lower falsetto when he’s in chest voice — meaning, singing from the diaphragm with more strength — to mid-falsetto when singing in head voice — meaning singing more from the throat, more air in the notes.

His ability to reach for high notes is commendable, a vocal quality that many a daydreaming alto singer could only hope to acquire. That being said, his voice is unspectacular in every other aspect. It’s strong when it has to be, tender at tender moments; however, there’s nothing in it that differentiates it from a milieu of pop stars, and in the context of the group was easily overshadowed.

In terms of his dancing, he did as much as anybody else in DBSK. However, while Yunho seems to have a sense of control over his long limbs, Changmin strikes me as stiff when he’s trying to control his movement and awkward when he lets go.

Be warned…the music in this video is actually pretty awful.

Changmin’s Dancing

On a completely superficial level, his adorableness is beyond contagious. Every time I see him, I get this urge to indulge in a cheek-pinch. Unfortunately, that cuteness and, consequently, his youth remind me of my younger brother. In that way, any chance at actual sex appeal for me is completely lost.

Granted, his maturity surpassed — and at times, still does surpass — the other members’ and his snarky sense of humour does wonderful things to my day, when I look at him all I see is puppy-dog face.

These elements combine to make him an (arguable) #5 for me. It really was a tough decision to put the maknae of the group at the bottom… yet again. However, it gets tougher for me as the list continues. Changmin, though adorable in every single sense of the word, doesn’t have the same strong effect on me as the other four members. As much as his maturity and vocal height created much needed balance for the group, I’m afraid for me that’s all it was… balance.

I hope you’ll “stay tuned” for the remainder of my list. If not, this will at least provide me a way to purge myself of the craziness that has become my life since I was thrown headlong into the DBSK hurricane.

As unexpected as my path was to loving all things weird, more unexpected is my ability to get attention for writing about the stuff.

I’m excited about reading this list. I have recently been getting into the OT5 and it’s such a weird thing to add your own opinion when some have been sorting out theirs for years.

      @Cheryl, Hey. I’m glad somebody’s excited…HaHa.

Unlike most, I didn’t have years to sort any opinions out. Literally, I came to the fandom, like, two or three months ago, so I had MUCH to catch up on. Luckily for me, I’m a quick study and once I sink my teeth into something (from tennis to music) it’s all over…OBSESSION ENSUES AND IT NEVER ENDS!!!! ::ahem::, sorry about that.

Anyway, hope you stick around. I won’t be posting these everyday, but sporadically until I reach number one…hopefully that will fall on the 26th. We’ll see how I do. Wish me luck :)

After much nagging from Julz, I did learn the names… but it took me longer to learn the names in DBSK than in Big Bang, maybe because I have more friends that are into Big Bang so I was constantly bombarded.

On first impression, I would have ranked Changmin probably #2 or #3 – I think everyone puts Jae on #1 on first impressions hahahahaha. After watching the DVD, I told Julz that my ranking was changed, and Changmin ended up in #4 or #5 depending on the song and situation. xD

I will let you know the rest as you go along, so we don’t spoil anything haha.

But right now, I’m agreeing with you.

    • @amy, Oh, YAY! I like it when people agree with me…HaHa. Hopefully, it gets interesting as the list goes on. I’d like to see if any discussion actually gets started amongst the Cassies, though my little voice probably isn’t all that influential to spark conversation. It may or may not be, but as I pointed out, it’s a little bit of a mental strain on my part with the top three in particular.

I never ranked him that highly at any point in this craziness, so part of me always knew that I was going to put Changmin 5th (I won’t say last, because I DO like him…his personality just tickles me and I love his sense of humour to no end!)

It took me a second to learn their names as well (for instance, naming Micky and Yoochun as separate entities at one point…FAIL XD), but once you get invested…there’s no turning back…HaHa.

I’ll try to remember to reveal my first impressions for all of them, although I don’t think that’s going to be a problem…HaHa.

@Camiele White, I don’t like their ‘English’ names. LOL So I just stuck to Yoochun and Junsu xD and the likes.

I remember I did some graphics for Julz, and I kept saying that those two looked alike, it was messy to keep files and PSD layers in order xD

Anyway, I don’t know enough of DBSK to keep on talking. I just remember thinking that it’d be awesome if Changmin got his wish to charm Emma Watson at one point. hahaha.

You know, I am surprised that I agree on putting Changmin as number 5. Instinctly I would put Yunho, but that is when I am ranking him as a vocalist. In an overall evaluation he would be higher.

Aw lol, this reminds me at my early days as a Cassie. I would then rank Junsu last cus I just couldn’t find him attractive. Today he might just be on the number 1 spot hahaha. Aw gosh, I guess it’s time to revaluate the guys and see where they are standing. It’s hard to be objective when I am so “biased” but I guess it could be fun to try!
