The Fangirly Diary of a Geek Girl: The first new mutants!

THURSDAY

Here’s the promo for Steven Universe‘s “Wanted” episode, an the one-hour special event premiering on Memorial Day, that is May 29th.

American Gods may have debuted recently, but it’s been gathering enough good will with Starz that we are getting a season 2 renewal, which should launch mid-2018. Damn, it’s been a couple of weeks after the Bryan Fuller and Michael Green adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s novel premiered on April 30.

Here’s one upcoming documentary I am very interested in. Looking For Leia, directed the Annalise Ophelian (a “Class of ’77” Star Wars fan), highlights the women of Star Wars, but also it will be about how women “find these fantastic and rich ways to survive and thrive” in the midst of marginalization. This documentary speaks to my heart and just watching me fills me with feels. I am lucky that my own father shared his love with Star Wars with my siblings and I, with not distinctions between his son and his daughters. Also, yay for Huttslayer, the renamed Slave Leia costume!

The perception of male dominance in fandom is, I think, accurate, and a reflection of how sexism functions in the world. I think women’s fandom is in many ways a reflection of how women have always navigated that sexism.

FRIDAY

Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch, Split) and Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) are the first signed to star in the X-Men spinoff New Mutants. Anya Taylor-Joy will play Magik, sister of Colossus. Maisie will play Wolfsbane who has the ability to turn into a wolf. It seems Fox is making serious efforts to find ethnically appropriate actors, searching far and wide for a Native American to play Moonstar and a South American for Sunspot. Well, kudos to you! Also, here’s comicbook artist Phil Noto’s interpretation of both actresses in their roles:

Spider-Man: Homecoming‘s marketing team shared a couple of hi-res picture batches that mostly show Peter Parker’s schoolmates, including Zendaya’s Michelle… and yes, she is just Michelle dammit! You know, just like Benedict Cumberbatch was just John Harrison and totally not Khan, you guys!

My character is 100 percent Michelle, that’s her name, I promise I’m not lying. She’s definitely a different character. This is a character I can have fun with and just really create what I wanted to make her and the director a lot of really cool ideas about how to make her weird and interesting and cool. She says weird things at the wrong time, but that’s why people like her.

Finally, in box office news, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has passed $500 million worldwide! Congrats on all the cash! Of course, China was its biggest earner overseas with $62.2 million. On the other hand, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword ain’t doing half as great, with poor reviews and poor predictions. Yep, it will likely bomb.

And that’s it for the week. Before I go, I want to wish Happy Birthday to Lars Mikkelsen, Stephen Amell, Piccolo, Rosario Dawson, Rami Malek and Domhnall Gleeson. Yes, I am saying Happy Birthday to Piccolo, the one thing I have in common with Akira Toriyama because he’s my favourite Dragon Ball character too~
