The Fangirly Diary of a Geek Girl: The director DC deserves, but not the one it needs?

WEDNESDAY

Hugh Jackman and James Mangold talked about Logan to Empire Magazine. And this was Mangold’s original pitch to the studio:

I said, “I want to make Little Miss Sunshine with Logan, Charles Xavier, and X-23. Trap these superheroes in a van on a highway in the year 2029 and see what happens.”

Here’s the Apocalypse Now style IMAX poster of Kong: Skull Island. Very appropriate what will all the 70s setting. The film will premiere March 10, 2017 in USA.

Denis Villeneuve (of Sicario and Arrival fame) has been confirmed as the director of the Dune remake. Damn dude, don’t you have enough  shepherding beloved sci-fi project, Blade Runner 2049? OK, Legendary Entertainment got what they wanted, since he was the rumoured frontrunner since they snapped up the rights this past November. Not only that, but the tweet from Brian Herbert (son of Dune novels author, Frank Herbert) suggest it will be a franchise… which is actually a better idea if they can pull it off than try to cram everything into one movie. But then again, everything is a franchise in this day and age. I have faith this new “Dune series film project” should work out better than David Lynch’s disowned 1984 adaptation… you know, the one with Sting.

THURSDAY

This week we also had news on another diverse cast of another Marvel TV series! Runaways, the highly anticipated project with streaming service, Hulu (ugh, why not Netflix, Marvel!) is the story of six diverse teenagers who can barely stand each other but who must unite against a common foe–their parents. And the cast looks goodRunaways comic co-creator and series executive consultant Brian K. Vaughn had this to say:

I’m so excited for fans of the comic to watch this perfect cast of amazing actors, all of whom embody the spirit of their characters more than I ever could have imagined.

FRIDAY

Yep, we are getting another Nazi Zombie movie. Yes, there’s more than one. And J.J. Abrams is producing! The project, now called Overlord, has been sitting around at Paramount since 2007. And it’s basically Return to Castle Wolfenstein: The Movie, if you read the synopsis… and wasn’t that movie announced back in 2002? Whatever, Wolfenstein 3D is still my fav because I got to kill robot Hitler!

The story follows “two paratroopers who are caught behind enemy lines after their plane crashes on a mission to destroy a German Radio Tower in a small town outside of Normandy during the D-Day invasion. After reaching their target, the two paratroopers come to realize that besides fighting off Nazi soldiers, they also must combat against supernatural forces that are a result of a secret Nazi experiment.”

You know how Fox wanted to develop Black Lightning, a DC Comics-based series about one of their first African-American superheroes? Fox decided that they didn’t want to order a pilot after all. Thankfully, the show ended up in the place where all the other DC superheroes are on the TV, The CW. I guess we could expect a Black Lighting crossover with Arrow/Flash/Legends of Tomorrow/Supergirl in the future if all goes well?

The hourlong drama will center on Jefferson Pierce, who hung up his suit and his secret identity years ago. However, with a daughter hell-bent on justice and a star student being recruited by a local gang, he’ll be pulled back into the fight as the wanted vigilante and DC legend Black Lightning.

Here’s our first decent look of Stranger Things season 2, and man those Ghostbusters costumes are super cute! We only have a few details, like it will takes place in 1984 — one year after the events of the first season — and while “the Demogorgon was destroyed but evil wasn’t”. Also, it will debut this Halloween on Netflix.

And that’s it for the week. Before I go, I want to wish Happy Birthday to Elijah Wood, Frank Darabont, Christian Bale, Brent Spiner and Warwick Davis.
