The Fangirly Diary of a Geek Girl: Plotlines from Tumblr!

FRIDAY

OMG! It happened! The Hunger Games: Catching Fire actually surpassed Iron Man 3 $409.4 to  $409.3 as USA’s 2013’s top grossing movie! I mean, it hasn’t won world-wide but still! This is a great step to all the naysayers who claimed women-led films couldn’t make big bucks!

So let’s talk about Steve McQueen’s new proyect. Yeah, I have not much idea what it is about except it will be a TV drama, and BBC is obviously very happy to be working with McQueen~ The director did say that it will be set in his native west London and spanning the late Sixties to the present day. So kinda biographic or at least influenced by his experiences:

I don’t think there has been a serious drama series in Britain with black people from all walks of life as the main protagonists.

Talking about BBC, we have some great news (at least from me) about Doctor Who! Moffat told Doctor Who Magazine that series eight (and possibly series nine) will air uninterrupted! No annoying mid-seasons!

We’re not going to do splits [in series eight], and the same format will repeat exactly the following year like that – so it will be the traditional form.

Moffat also talked about Capaldi’s Doctor relationship with Jenna-Louise Colman’s character~

We’re going to give Clara a Doctor who is a much older, fiercer, madder, less reliable Doctor who leads her a merry dance. […] The last two Doctors have been ‘your boyfriend’ Doctors. It was time for the show to flip around. The new version of the show is quite old now.

I get the point but that is ageist! Just because he is old doesn’t mean he cannot be “my boyfriend” Doctor! It’s not like Matt Smith’s Doctor was a good “boyfriend” anyway~

On more TV series I love news, we now know that Game of Thrones season 4 will premiere on April 6th. And we were also promised a new trailer for this Sunday… and because of the era we live in, we have trailers of trailers! Here:

And here’s something I might love even if only for nostalgia value… Sailor Moon‘s new anime! Yes! After many moves and pushes, the official website for the Sailor Moon 20th Anniversary Project announced that the new Sailor Moon anime will premiere on July. Yes, this July! And it’s not a remake of the first anime! Here’s another project that claims it will be closer to the source material (in this case, the manga), and I want to believe!

This second anime adaptation of Bishōjo Senshi Sailor Moon is not remaking the previous anime, but adapting [Naoko Takeuchi’s] original manga and starting from scratch again. It is quite a project. The entire staff has been working hard to show everyone an entirely new Bishōjo Senshi Sailor Moon, so please look forward to it.

Talking about source material, Disney now wants total control of Star Wars canon, and thus has created a special committee which will figure out what is and isn’t part of said canon. So The Expanded Universe? As some of its material gets judged, parts of it might as well become fanfiction. I wonder how exhaustive that will be. And damn, it’s such a big nerdy job to do! Will be interesting how it ends up being all unified!

Hey, we have new pictures of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, including a nice one with (comicbook) BFFs Cap and Falcon.

Chris Evans also talked about the relationship between Steve Rogers and Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson (a.k.a. Falcon):

Meeting Mackie’s character, he used to serve, now he works at the VA counseling guys who come home with PTSD — they connect on that level. I think they’re both wounded warriors who don’t bleed on other people. Cap has no one to bleed on. I think Mackie knows how to handle people like that. … Sometimes when things are bad, trusting a stranger is the way to go.

Yay! We finally have a first look at Loki: Agent of Asgard #1! And boy, he apparently is pretty in canon! Or at least I hope that’s what Hawkeye meant with Loki looking kind of “one direction-y”. Also, I’m glad those Marvel superheroes keep up with pop culture~ Makes them look all relatable and stuff!

While you know my heart lies mainly with Marvel, there’s one area where DC always kicks ass, and that’s animated films. And there’s one I am kinda excited about. It’s Justice League: War, and talks about how members of the League meet for the first time. Here’s what writer Heath Corson wants for this Blu-ray release:

My take was basically The Breakfast Club With Superheroes. These are guys who are meeting each other for the first time; these are people who have maybe seen or heard of each other. The world is just starting to know about them. What if they had no idea about each other, what they’re capable of, what they’ll do, what they can do?

And that it’s for the week. Before I go, I want to wish Happy Birthday to Graham McTavish, Diane Keaton, Hayao Miyazaki, Marilyn Manson, Rinko Kikuchi, Sherlock Holmes, Jeremy Renner, Nicolas Cage, David Bowie and Severus Snape! Phew, that was a mouthful!
