The Fangirly Diary of a Geek Girl: Our fairy Godfather

THURSDAY

Alan Rickman, beloved actor from the Harry Potter franchise, also Hans Gruber from Die Hard, also the Sheriff of Nottingham and the best part of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, has died. He was, just like David Bowie, 69 years old. And just like David Bowie, cancer was at fault. Yep, f*ck cancer.

Many people had beautiful things to say about him, whether it was fans paying tribute at Hogwarts, Platform 9 3/4 or online, or J.K. Rowling and the Harry Potter cast, or celebrities that were either close friends or simply appreciated him. And yet the most beautiful tributes for me came from long-time friend Emma Thompson, and young actor Sean Biggerstaff, who played Oliver Wood in the Harry Potter film. Here are some extracts from each:

He was the ultimate ally. In life, art and politics. I trusted him absolutely. He was, above all things, a rare and unique human being and we shall not see his like again. – Emma Thompson

He was our fairy Godfather. He was the whisper in the right ear at the right time. He was the reassuring message when he sensed, always correctly, that we needed it most. He was new head shots or carpets or travel money when times were tough. How he found the time, let alone the will for all this is a mystery to me. He was the most generous, wise, supportive, talented, charismatic, empathetic person I think I’ve ever known. – Sean Biggerstaff

Oh yeah, this Year’s Oscar nominations also happened. And the highlight was Mad Max: Fury Road got a freaing nomination for “Best Picture”… and “Best Director” for George Miller, among other nominations, 10 in total.

As with every year, some films many thought desserving didn’t get a nod. And so, here are the Biggest Oscar Snubs of 2016, according to IO9, that included of course the complete lack of diversity (again), which then became the #oscarsowhite hashtag on Twitter.

Well, guess this nom made George Miller happy, and which prompted him to said he would love to make more Mad Max movies… despite saying “I won’t make more ‘Mad Max’ movies” a couple of days ago. It was a misunderstanding, guys! It is noisy in New York! More Mad Max is totally happening!

That was a completely garbled interview. I was in New York and it was so noisy and the journalist was asking me questions on a red carpet at the National Board of Review. She completely got the wrong fragments of information that were just not true. I said no, [another Mad Max movie] will not be next, and she took that to mean I never wanted to make another Mad Max. It won’t necessarily be next, but I have two more stories.

On great comic news, Marvel announced Star Wars: Poe Dameron! The comic takes place between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, and will introduce a new First Order villain that writer Charles Soule says “is going to feel fresh and cool”. And of course, we are totally getting more BB-8.

On new Guillermo del Toro project news, he’s going to develop and potentially direct the film adaptation of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark books! Well, if it has to be made, I trust in Guillermo! Now when will he do it, with all the million projects he is working on? No idea. But he sure confirmed his involvement on Twitter, while mentioning Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was “a favorite book of youth”.

FRIDAY

Here’s a promo for The Night Manager, where former British soldier Jonathan Pine (Tom Hiddleston) is recruited by Burr (Olivia Colman), an intelligence operative, where he must infiltrate the inner circle of arms dealer Richard Onslow Roper (Hugh Laurie), Roper’s girlfriend Jed (Elizabeth Debicki), and associate Corcoran (Tom Hollander). And that promo makes it look damn awesome!

Welp, apparently Neil Patrick Harris will play the asshole Uncle Olaf in the Netflix adaptation of Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. But things are yet to be ready, since Mark Hudis has exited show as showrunner. A replacement has yet to be named.

OMG! Tim Curry’s is back to Rocky Horror Picture Show for Fox’s two-hour production! But not as Dr. Frank N. Furter of course. It’s Laverne Cox’s turn. Curry will play the criminologist narrator (played by Charles Gray in the film), who gives all the Time Warp dance instructions~

Let’s end this not-so-great week on a high note. Meet Bernard Stark! Yep, that’s Howard Stark’s pink flamingo, and I hope it has more than one scene in Agent Carter Season 2. Also featured in the clip, Peggy and Jarvis being extremely English~

And that’s it for the week. Before I go, I want to wish Happy Birthday to Severus Snape, Imelda Staunton, J.K. Simmons, John Lasseter, Michael Peña, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Orlando Bloom and James Nesbitt.
