The Fangirly Diary of a Geek Girl: Ladies of the Galaxy

SUNDAY

Mostly Marvel news today! First, this is what we know about this “political thriller” called Captain America: The Winter Soldier~

Welcome official Thor: The Dark World website! And new pictures and info on the movie, courtesy of Empire Magazine. Here’s what director Alan Taylor has to say about Asgard (and probably other worlds of the Nine Realms) “new looks”:

When I had that first meeting with Marvel I said, ‘I liked the first one, but for me the world would look different, it would feel different. I mean, I really respect what they did. It was a conscious choice to say, ‘These are not ancient gods, this is an alien race that’s been mistaken for ancient gods.’ Which is an intriguing way to do it, and it’s supported by Marvel mythology. But it had the effect of making everything new and shiny, and that was what bugged me the most. So I came in thinking, ‘Okay, let’s look at the ancient and see what happens.

Here’s the whole article courtesy of Tumblr. I still need my Loki fix, though!

Nerds be complaining but Iron Man 3 made bank! Now it’s the fifth highest grossing movie of all time (not adjusted for inflation)! Only the last Harry Potter movie, The AvengersTitanic and Avatar have made more money. Also, here are some Mandarin rings, that were cool but totally useless, unlike the comicbook ones~

Nice The Amazing Spider-Man 2 set pics!

On something different, Amanda Abbington talks about Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman’s amazing chemistry~ But what is cute is having to explain to her kid that “Lucius Malfoy” was gonna take her away when she worked in Case Histories with Jason Isaacs:

He was terrified the first time I did Case Histories. When he found out who I was working with, he thought his mummy was going to die – Lucius Malfoy was about to take her away. We had to explain that wasn’t the case.

MONDAY

Happy Birthday, Christopher Lee! Also congrats on his new heavy metal album Charlemagne: the Omens Of Death!

Edgar Wright talks about the stuff he’s bussy with right now (mostly about The World’s End) at the London Comic Con. Also doesn’t think he’ll work in any future Star Wars movies since he was “perhaps too vicious about the prequel trilogy in Spaced.” You know, the one where he had Simon Pegg say Jar Jar Binks make the Ewoks look like fucking Shaft. LOL.

Talking about Star Wars, Daniel Radcliffe and John Noble wouldn’t mind a part in Star Wars. It would be interesting if both got parts, but got switched around. That is having Harry Potter being the bad guy, and Denethor a good guy. Not that Denethor was pure evil, but he was a shitty parent (and steward)~

OK, those The Wolverine covers for Empire Magazine are kick-ass (and way better than Enterteinment Weekly‘s crappy one)

Michael Shannon is quite happy to be in Man of Steel! I mean, obviously; but it’s nice to read it anyway~

I can’t fathom how people would say no to Man Of Steel. I thought they were pulling my leg… Then I got on set, and realized they were serious. I had no qualms about doing it. I loved it. It was a blast. […] I don’t think Zack has anything to worry about. I got to see it and I’m really bowled over by what he did. I think it’s really special.

I’ve never bought an Scholastic Harry Potter book- Canadians get Raincoast books with the original UK covers and text. They just don’t at the ‘eh’ by the end to make it sound Canadian. “You’re a wizard, eh, Harry.” See, it’s dumb.

And, I didn’t really enjoy Kiki as much as other Ghibli films, but if it’s the same person who handled Wolf Children, then I might give it a watch when it becomes available.

@amy, I don’t know much about how Canadians talk but I can understand the American version, in the way that some words have different meaning in UK English. For example the Weasley jumpers/Weasley sweaters.

@mirella, it’s not as different to the point of not getting it. Otherwise we wouldn’t get Spanish or Mexican editions.

@amy, You would be surprised xD I remember when some Americans who read the original HP books were confused about the Weasley jumper things and thought it meant something else until they saw the movies and knew they meant sweaters xD

@mirella, for example, Canadians (maybe from BC), they like to call cans of soda, simply “pop” – they’re ambivalent on their use of beanie/toque. And I don’t think the common usage of the word “bum” refers to people’s butts, but lazy hobos xD Imagine a Brit hearing a Canadian saying “Look at that bum, Harry” xD

  2. aw man, did they have to carry over that particular bucky hairstyle?
