The Fangirly Diary of a Geek Girl: I’ve been too long I’m glad to be back

THURSDAY

Lots of Man of Steel stuff, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly’s summer preview issue:

We get new pictures, Zack Snyder saying there won’t be Kryptonite in the movie, and screenwriter David S. Goyer telling interesting facts concerning Krypton:

People were bred to be warriors or scientists or what-have-you, and there’s a whole element in the movie about nature versus nurture. Kal-El is unique because he’s a natural conception, free from genetic manipulation to choose his own course in life – which also makes his existence highly illegal.

Talking about DC, they gets their first transgender character! In Batgirl #19, the character Alysia Yeoh will reveal that she is a transwoman to her roommate, Barbara Gordon (a.k.a. Batgirl). But Alysia is not only a transwoman, she’s also bisexual. Writer Gail Simone says:

The nice thing is, with Alysia, she’s been in the book since issue one, readers already know her and care about her. They’ve been asking for more of her story, so I think they are already rooting for her. It makes me happy—I have met so many trans readers over the years. I hope they love Alysia as much as we do.

Tom Hiddleston was on “This Morning“, talks about being a sex symbol, his experience with UNICEF and a bit of Thor: The Dark World.

Also, here’s a description of the trailer, and OMG it seems amazing! And I will finally manage to see how Loki looks like this time around. Marvel has been hiding him for too long!

Richard Armitage is über cute in a couple of interviews. And promises at least 20 minutes of screentime for the Battle of Five Armies. He wishes he could be better at “jumping out of character in between takes” so he could be more popular. And about having to be the dour dwarf, with all the others getting to have a bit of fun, he says that’s the story of his life ’cause “I’m always the slightly dour one who doesn’t get a punchline”. Also, some lucky bastards will get to watch The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey again + have Richard Armitage with them.

FRIDAY

RDJ’s next stop at being awesome?  Germany! Work that lederhosen! He gets photocalls and press conferences, and then Gwyneth Paltrows tweets her thanks and a picture with both of them… and casually drops the ship name Pepperony. Damn, they keep destroying that fourth wall!

BTW, the Iron Man 3 armors look so pretty in these promos that I might cry!

Screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely talk a bit about Thor: The Dark World and more about Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Once again, there’s talk about the classic issue of “why doesn’t he call The Avengers for help?”

If it’s Cap’s story, if it really has to do with his life, then your desire for him to call for help is out.  It’s his life.  It’s a question of making it personal to him and it’s also a question of pacing… I can’t tell you what the plot is, but it has a lot to do with Cap, on a thematic level, as a person.  If it was giant space robots, anyone can fight giant space robots.  Only Cap can do what’s happening in this movie.

First reactions to a rough edition of Old Boy by Spike Lee are actually pretty good! Both Brolin and Copley get favorable reviews. Sadly, Olsen didn’t get as good grades. We also get loads of promised violence that would be summarized by the words “bloody, gratuitous and hammer”. As for the ending:

The last few minutes differ greatly from the Korean film in a way that I feel fits this version very well. I don’t want to give away too much, but to me, it almost makes more sense than the original’s ending.

Let’s talk about Spartacus‘ finale, which made me cry like a little girl. I mean, sure, I knew they weren’t going to change history but still! Even Samuel L. Jackson was upset! One thing I am happy about though? One of my OTP lives! It’s something. Anyway, here’s a long spoilery interview with show creator Steven DeKnight.

And that’s it for the week. Before I go, concept art from many movies (ok, 4 movies: The Avengers, Thor, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters and Battleship) done by Steve Jung. Also, some from Man of Steel, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier! [1]
