The Fangirly Diary of a Geek Girl: Godfather of the Dead

WEDNESDAY

The BBC answer to all the people whining about The Doctor now being a woman? Basically, deal with it.

The Doctor is an alien from the planet Gallifrey and it has been established in the show that Time Lords can switch gender. […] As the Controller of BBC Drama has said, Jodie is not just a talented actor but she has a bold and brilliant vision for her Doctor. She aced it in her audition both technically and with the powerful female life force she brings to the role. She is destined to be an utterly iconic Doctor.

We know Game of Thrones ain’t forever, and now that the upcoming final season is getting closer, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have their sights on their next series… an alt-history where the South successfully seceded, while a new Civil War looms in the present of… will it still be called USA? CSA now? As in Confederate States of America? So yeah, it’s called Confederate, and will join The Handmaid’s Tale and The Man in the High Castle on current shows about alternate history that lead to dystopian futures.

In obvious news, The Hollywood Reporter has (ahem) reported that Jon Watts is in talks to return to the director chair for the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel. Well yes, the movie is doing ok and dude has a good working relationship with Marvel, so it is a no-brainer!

Mattel revealed their Justice League Barbies and they are AMAZING! Check out Wonder Woman, a.k.a. Diana, Princess of Themyscira; and Mera, Queen of Atlantis… and also wife of Aquaman. These fully articulated dolls wear their signature costume from the film, and comes with accessories! And yes, those at SDCC could just buy them there.

THURSDAY

Chester Bennington, Linkin Park’s singer, passed away. He committed suicide by hanging himself. And this was the second blow of the week, even if I was aware of his difficult life and the rough moments he had since his friend Chris Cornell died some months ago. While I wasn’t the biggest Linkin Park fan, I did enjoy their music, and their first two albums accompanied my teenage years. Some of their songs are my favourites at those rare Karaoke nights, even when I can’t rap like Mike Shinoda and definitely can’t sing like Chester. But every time I sang those songs I did it with my heart.

Here’s the first Clip from Netflix’s Death Note, where Light meets Ryuk. While Willem Dafoe’s voice is on point, and is acting circles around the actor who gets to emote on camera, his characterizations feel so OOC. I know, this is an adaptation because America… but why would the Shinigami have a personality change? Why is he egging Light on? Ryuk is neutral and just wants to have some fun dammit!

Talking about Netflix movies, here’s the official trailer of Bright, where Will Smith is part of a human-orc police team with Joel Edgerton as said orc. Yes, this in an urban fantasy! And if it weren’t for the fact that it is directed by David Ayer and written by Max Landis; I will be 50% more happy to watch this. That said, I will watch this and hope for the best because URBAN FANTASY DAMMIT! And yay for not evil orcs!

According to The Hollywood Reporter (or rather their sources), Shazam! might be the next DC movie to shoot! The production would start in January or February of next year with a likely release in 2019. We have yet to know who will play the lead, and it is unclear whether Dwayne Johnson, who should play as Shazam! villain Black Adam in a spinoff, will be involved with the project.

OMG! Check out this Pacific Rim: Uprising promo! The video joined the announcement of new Bandai action figures, and it is narrated by Ellen McLain, the voice of the Jaeger A.I. from the first movie (and GLaDOS from Portal), showing off the new and cool Jaegers! And hey, John Boyega as Jake Pentecost! Looking good!
