The Fangirly Diary of a Geek Girl: Female version of 300

THURSDAY

In the pop culture tragedy of the week: Netflix canceled Sense8… and freaking Pride Month. WTF, Netflix! How could you! Sure, we know that Netflix has been cancelling the expensive shows (The Get Down was cancelled last week… but the most expensive one The Crown got renewed for a second season), but still! Netflix CEO Reed Hastings went all “we’ve canceled very few shows … I’m always pushing the content team: We have to take more risk; you have to try more crazy things.” Well, thanks for cancelling the riskier shows, Mr. CEO! In that context, the statement of Cindy Holland, Netflix’s vice president of original content, sounds kinda mocking.

It is everything we and the fans dreamed it would be: bold, emotional, stunning, kick ass, and outright unforgettable. Never has there been a more truly global show with an equally diverse and international cast and crew, which is only mirrored by the connected community of deeply passionate fans all around the world.

On better news, we are getting another J.R.R. Tolkien book. Yep, it’s getting published a hundred years after it was written. Beren and Lúthien is about the fate of the titular lovers, a mortal man and an immortal elf who try to steal from the greatest of all evil beings, Melkor. A version of the tale was later reworked into The Silmarillion. The story was partially inspired by Tolkien’s wife Edith, and in fact, the names Beren and Lúthien are carved on the gravestone Tolkien and his wife share in Wolvercote cemetery in Oxford. Quite romantic!

Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples’ Saga has been getting higher praise since its debut, and so people as… what are the chances of a movie adaptation? Tho, personally, I’d rather it be a TV (or streaming) series. Brian K. Vaughan had this to say:

Maybe when the story is finished? I think Fiona and I are both open to Saga possibly being translated into another medium someday, and we’ve gotten a lot of very flattering offers, but for the moment, we’re just concentrating on trying to make the greatest comic book we can.

LEGO sets aren’t the most reliable ones, specially if you are looking for plot details. That said, is that Fenris wolf in The Ultimate Battle for Asgard LEGO set for Thor: Ragnarok? Well, it’s appropriate in a Ragnarok story, but it’s the first time I realize he will (possibly) be in the film! Also, why is Loki wearing in blue on the Thor vs. Hulk: Arena Clash LEGO set?

FRIDAY

Congrats to Wonder Woman who not only had a $98 million debut, making it the biggest theatrical debut for a film with a female director. Which is a nice follow-up to knowing this is the best reviewed DC film since The Dark Knight.

We are getting a new Spider-Man animated series, and it’s totally because of Spider-Man: HomecomingMarvel’s Spider-Man will reboot of Peter Parker’s origin story (again) to follow him as a 15-year-old. The art looks better in motion than in the posters tho.

Steven Universe‘s creator Rebecca Sugar had a great interview with Entertainment Weekly, apropos of Steven Universe Soundtrack Vol. 1 being launched. What I took from this is mostly that two of my favourite songs in the entire show, “Stronger Than You” and “Here Comes A Thought” were basically meant to complement each other.

“Stronger Than You” is Garnet’s pride and victory, a celebration of Garnet as a manifestation of love. But “Here Comes A Thought” is how she maintains and protects that love.

And that’s it for the week. Before I go, I want to wish Happy Birthday to Paul Bettany, Danny Elfman, Colin Farrell, Clint Eastwood, Tom Holland, Morgan Freeman, Dominic Cooper and Morena Baccarin.
