The Fangirly Diary of a Geek Girl: Fantastic films (and where to find them)

THURSDAY

We have known for some time that Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them was not going to be the last movie set in the Harry Potter world. There was talk about a new trilogy about Newt Scamander. But nope. J.K. Rowling tweeted that Fantastic Beasts is the start of a five-part film series. Yep, you read that right! And J.K. Rowling herself will write the scripts! In fact, “currently putting the finishing touches to the second one”. And since David Yates said Dumbledore is mentioned in the film, I guess we’ll get to watch a young Dumbledore (and Grindelwald) in one of the future films. So, I guess we are getting a new sorta Harry Potter film every two years maybe? I guess by the time it is over, J.K. and Warner can reconsider making Harry Potter and the Cursed Child into a feature film. By then the original trio will be old enough to retake their parts!

Here’s the final trailer of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story! And for those of us who don’t pick apart every piece of geekery we see, here’s a list of easter eggs, and another list of the best lines (“Save the Rebellion! Save the Dream!” kinda reminded me of “Save the Cheerleader! Save the World!”)

Well damn, we are getting a War of the Worlds TV Series at MTV! Ah, it’s written by former Teen Wolf writer Andrew Cochran and executive produced by Teen Wolf creator Jeff Davis. Oh well. I’ll give some episodes a shot, I guess!

FRIDAY

Check out Laverne Cox singing “Sweet Transvestite”, from the all-new Rocky Horror Picture Show on Fox. I still like Tim Curry’s version better, but this is not bad. Like at all! Consider me shivering with antici…pation!

You know that Studio Ghibli kids’ series Ronja the Robber’s Daughter? It’s coming to Amazon, and Gillian Anderson is doing the narration! The series first premiered in 2014 and is told in 26 parts. It was also directed by Hayao Miyazaki’s son, Gorō Miyazaki. Here’s an old trailer:

Justice League / Power Rangers are getting a crossover comic book, arriving in January 2017. DC Comics and Saban Brands is parterning with BOOM! Studios to produce both blockbuster films. It won’t be a direct adaptation of each respective movie tho. In fact it will lean toward more traditional versions of each team – like the 90’s Power Rangers for example. The comicbook wil be written by Injustice: Gods Among Us‘ Tom Taylor, with artwork by Stephen Byrne.

Last news of the column brings us to Mark Zuckerberg looking for someone to voice his AI, and Robert Downey Jr. offering to do it if Zuckerberg paid Paul Bettany, who would then donate the payment to a cause of Cumberbatch’s choosing. Go for it, Mark!

And that’s it for the week. Before I go, I want to wish Happy Birthday to Sigourney Weaver, Guillermo del Toro, Hugh Jackman, Josh Hutcherson, Mia Wasikowska and Ben Whishaw.
