The Fangirly Diary of a Geek Girl: A disturbance in the franchise

TUESDAY

Let’s start with the nice news, we are getting a Harry Potter book club: The Wizarding Book Club! That’s right! And official meeting spot to dissect the ins-and-outs of all the Harry Potter books… which is something I have been doing for ages. But hey, not it’s official! During June and July, better start rereading Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone , and the discussions will be around Magic and the Muggle world, first impressions, education, friendship and heroes and villains. There will also be Book Club treats, including new articles examining all things Potter and iconic book extracts. Check out the intro video:

Dracula is the new Sherlock! As in Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat are now in charge of BBC’s Dracula. And the format would be the same: a miniseries run of feature-length episodes. I guess with Moffat stepping out of Doctor Who, and no news of a new Sherlock season, he has the time. Considering the good Sherlock did for Benedict Cumberbatch’s career, who would be the fellow who will play the iconic vampire.

Welp, we are getting a Watchmen TV series, courtesy of HBO and Damon Lindelof. Zack Snyder, who directed the movie, used to be involved in this adaptation, but that’s no longer the case. While The Hollywood Reporter claims the show will be based on Alan Moore’s comicbook, it doesn’t say much (understandable, it’s in early stages). Will it be a direct adaptation or use certain elements to tell a new story. Will they add parts of the Beyond Watchmen comicbook series? Will Alan Moore renege it too? LOL, that last one is totally a YES.

According to Jon Berg, who’s in charge to oversee the DC film universe for Warner Bros. together with Geoff Johns, Joss Whedon is “a big part already” of the DCEU.

He’s a great partner, collaborator; we want him to be ensconced. We bring people by, have general meetings and talk about comics and their favorite superhero movies. With Joss, he saw the master board, and he saw a Batgirl title and he said, “You guys seriously want to do Batgirl?” And we said, “Absolutely.” He said, “That’s my jam.”

On worrying news for the Star Wars franchise, the Han Solo origin movie lost its directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller due to creative differences. The film has been shooting since February. And while sources say there are several weeks left on the shoot , with re-shoots scheduled for later this summer, it’s practically unheard of for a movie to lose its director(s) this far into production. Damn. This is what they had to say:

Unfortunately, our vision and process weren’t aligned with our partners on this project. We normally aren’t fans of the phrase “creative differences” but for once this cliché is true. We are really proud of the amazing and world-class work of our cast and crew.

WEDNESDAY

Here’s the second trailer for Game of Thrones season 7. With some new footage and set to the dramatic piano song from the season 6 finale, it basically shows every major character still alive.

Not happy with that, HBO also released 12 new character posters. And while they are not OMG AMAZING, this time the journey was better than the destination, with HBO sending fans on a scavenger hunt to discover the posters online. They had to tweet #WinterisHere along with one of 12 specific emojis to @GameofThrones, in order to unlock each of the character posters. Check out some Lannisters:

The Hollywood Reported keeps bringing the goods! And now has, ahem, reported that Carnage will feature in Venom, dated for October 5, 2018. FYI, Cletus Kasady a.k.a. Carnage was a serial killer who ended up binding with the alien symbiote during a prison break, amplifying his psychosis and turning him into the crazy mofo villain. A source also said to THR that Tom Holland is only contractually obligated to Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3, but the idea is to bring him into the spinoffs and possibly other Marvel films. Right now, the kid is shooting Avengers: Infinity War.
