The 2012 Juan and Only Award Winners

Best Cinematography

Everyone’s favorite category! Not really though because it’s a bitch to choose a favorite here. All of the nominees were gorgeous to look at and there was almost a tie here. However, one man, nominated ten times by the Academy, came up above the rest.

WINNER: Roger Deakins (Skyfall)
RUNNER-UP: Mihai Malaimare Jr (The Master)

Best Foreign Film

We all knew who the winner of the Oscars was going to be this year and that was boring as hell, but my voters are crazier and know that there was a much better foreign film out there this year. Plus, we don’t rely on country submissions because I get to pick all the nominees myself.

WINNER: Holy Motors
RUNNER-UP: Amour

top25-holy

Best Animated Film

There wasn’t much of a fight put up in this category and I’m actually surprised that people didn’t really give some of the other films in the category the light of day. On the bright side, a certain Pixar film didn’t score, so we can all be very glad about that. Either way, both the winner and runner-up were great movies.

WINNER: Paranorman
RUNNER-UP: Wreck-It Ralph

Best Directorial Debut Feature

I couldn’t be happier with the result of this category. The winner was neck to neck with the runner-up right up until the final vote at which point I might have thrown my hands up in the air and waved them like I just didn’t care.

WINNER: Drew Goddard for The Cabin in the Woods
RUNNER-UP: Benh Zeitlin for Beasts of the Southern Wild

Best Ensemble

What a bunch of great casts this year. I’m a sucker for movies that handle big casts well and if there’s one man who knows how to do that it’s Paul Thomas Anderson. C’mon, have y’all seen Boogie Nights and Magnolia? Exactly. So, I guess you already know the winner because I basically spelled it out for you.

WINNER: The Master
RUNNER-UP: The Avengers

Best Adapted Screenplay

Another really cool bunch of nominees here, but I was rooting for what would easily be considered the most fucked up of the bunch to take this award home. Guess what? It did.

WINNER: Tracy Letts (Killer Joe)
RUNNER-UP: Chris Terrio (Argo)

Best Original Screenplay

Here’s another category where I was rooting for someone specific to win. I do genuinely think all the nominees are well-deserving of their place here, but my heart completely goes out to one, and wouldn’t you know, it won. I will say that the runner-up

WINNER: Drew Goddard & Joss Whedon (The Cabin in the Woods)
RUNNER-UP: Leos Carax (Holy Motors)

Juan Barquin

Just yer average twenty-something college student with no time on his hands who ends up watching (and writing) too many movies and shows for his own good.

I can live with these results. xD

  2. I’m still catching up on 2012’s releases but I did see Paranorman about a month ago and it was so good. Now I’m waiting for my library hold on Wreck-It Ralph to arrive.
