Diandra’s 2015 in Music
Other favorite songs of the year:
Suiyoubi no Campanella (水曜日のカンパネラ) – Shakushain (シャクシャイン)
A burst of midtempo energy. Thanks for the rec, Amy!
S. Maharba – All Over Now
Dreamy trip-hop from the collected-tracks album Most Forgotten, which can be sampled and purchased (at any price) on Bandcamp.
Rhiannon Giddens – Last Kind Words
Roots singer Giddens covers Geeshie Wiley’s classic with her own clear, strong voice. The New York Times wrote an extensive article about the song’s history here.
Ratatat – Supreme
Quiet late-night track from the lyricless rock band.
Gain – Paradise Lost
Although my enjoyment of this song was hampered by the accusations of some choreography copied without credit, I couldn’t help but keep watching the thing again and again. The best live version is from the March 17 performance on SBS MTV The Show.
Pridjevi – Ubila Sam Cvijet
Warm and approachable psychedelic rock from Croatia. The album https://pridjevi.bandcamp.com/ was a digital-only release in 2014, but Trouble In Mind Records picked it up for a CD and vinyl release in 2015.
Oddisee – That’s Love
Rapid rap with a retro background.
Murder By Death – Dream in Red
A brief, meditative track from the Old West-inspired alt-rock group.
Missy Elliott – WTF (Where They From) (Feat. Pharrell Williams)
Missy Elliott returns with this addictive single, also co-directing the music video with Dave Meyers.
