Amy’s Top50 Songs of 2011
15. R. Chord featuring Lala Hsu – Under the Willow Tree (柳樹下)
I love the trend of combining contemporary music — in this case, some pop rap a la Jay Chou — with traditional elements. I wasn’t much of a fan of all of R. Chord’s album for different reasons regarding me and my problem with the language. You know, rap is a thing that has a lot to do with understanding what they’re telling you. However, in the case of Under the Willow Tree it really works with Lala’s very traditional vocals.
The lyrics just bring the whole thing home for me.
11. St. Vincent – Cruel
You, at least, gotta love the song by the 30th second. Though I haven’t been into St. Vincent since the debut, Marry Me, this song got me back to listening. Plus, Annie Clark is pretty rocking.
