Amy’s Favorite 100 Actresses

45-41.

45. Madhuri Dixit (IN, ’67), 44. Rani Mukherji (IN, ’78), 43. Penelope Cruz (ES, ’74), 42. Olivia Williams (UK, ’68), 41. Laura Dern (US, ’67).

Considering my bias, I thought Rani would place a bit higher because I even like her in bad eye-roll-worthy movies. I think the strength of her acting relies solely on the expression of her eyes. No dialog needs to be spoken.

With Madhuri, even though she’s been considered a sex symbol and an institution for dancing, I like that she’s chosen dramatic roles that haven’t necessarily been successful with the public, but she keeps on trying those out, and testing us.

As for Penelope — please, people, stop referring to her as “Pene,PLEASE! — and Laura Dern, they’re the best when being neurotics. And I absolutely adore when Olivia Williams is in control. Her role on The Ghost Writer was so criminally overlooked.

40. Zhao Wei (CN, ’76), 39. Carina Lau (CN, ’65), 38. Zhang Ziyi (CN ’79), 37. Anne Hathaway (US, ’82), 36. Michelle Williams (US, ’80).

Oh, my~ aren’t Chinese actresses just fabulous?

While I do think that Zhao Wei could be heading the Angelina and Sarah Polley way into directing more often, I have a better perception of her as an actress. I think she navigates genres a lot easier… or it seems like it, at least. Plus, she’s played Mulan, so she trumps all. As for Mulan… whatever happened to that English-language version with Zhang Ziyi? I admit, Zhang isn’t one my of favorites, but I can’t deny she’s got one pretty illustrious career, so I can’t deny her a spot this high.
