Toronto Film Festival 2010

Early September ranks right up there with Christmas thanks to the cinematic nirvana I experience at the Toronto Film Festival. 2010 marked the festival’s 35th anniversary, and my own ninth go-round of the TIFF experience.

Undertow (Peruvian Film)

Selected by Peru to represent them at the upcoming Academy Awards, Undertow tells the story of Miguel, a fisherman in the small town of Cabo Blanco, where he is having a baby with his wife Mariela, but no one knows that Miguel is having an extramarital affair with Santiago.

The Ghost Writer tells the story of a ghost writer — referred to often as The Ghost — who gets hired by the former British Prime Minister Adam Lang — following his wife Ruth’s advice — to help him write his memoirs after the previous Ghost was found dead.

Cold Water of the Sea tells the story of a young couple about to get married that go on a holiday trip to a tropical “paradise,” when they run into a girl who seems to be lost in the middle of the night.

Crab Trap

Crab Trap tells the story of Daniel and the relationship he has with La Barra, a little black community in Colombia’s Pacific coast. In it, he meets with Cerebro, the leader of the Afro-descendant natives who are having territorial issues with a white man called El Paisa, who wants to build a hotel on the beach.

Puzzle (Argentinean Film)

Puzzle tells the story of Maria del Carmen, a housewife who has just turned 40-ish, and has spent the last 20 years of her life worrying about her husband and two sons. On her birthday, she receives a puzzle as a gift, and finds out she’s got a natural ability for them.

Carancho

Carancho tells the story of Sosa, a lawyer specialized in traffic accidents in Buenos Aires. Thanks to the corrupt system and insurance companies, he makes a living out of family victims, but one night he meets a young ER doctor.

Yuma, La

La Yuma tells the story of a girl from the poor neighborhoods of Managua, Nicaragua, who wants to become a professional boxer. As she deals with her possible love life, as well as her family life with her younger siblings, she finally gets the chance to train under renown boxing trainer Polvorita.
