Rajkahini Trailer with English Subtitles

Srijit Mukherji’s latest film, Rajkahini (রাজকাহিনী), has a subtitled trailer released in time for India’s and Pakistan’s Independence Day weekend, when the Partition occurred 69 years ago.

The historical film focuses on a group of women who work at a brothel that sits in the splitting line, sending their lives into violent chaos. The film stars Rituparna Sengupta, Lily Chakraborty, Parno Mitra, Jaya Ahsan, Sudiptaa Chakraborty, Priyanka Sarkar, Sohini Sarkar, Sayoni Ghosh, Ditipriya Roy, Ridhima Ghosh, Ena Saha, Nigel Akkara, Rudranil Ghosh, Saswata Chatterjee, Koushik Sen, Rajatabha Dutta, Abir Chatterjee, Jisshu Sengupta, Biswajit Chakraborty and Kanchan Mallik.

About his film, writer director Mukherji said [1]:

Apart from the research that I did, these four films [Mandi, Manthan, Mirch Masala, Gandhi and Pinjar] were very crucial in terms of references. Also, there is an interesting series of letters by Urvashi Butalia that highlights the fact that during Partition, women were the worst affected because they were considered the sign of honour for both the countries. So, whenever a country needed to harm another, they went straight for the women.

Rajkahini opens October 16 this year in West Bengal (India), and other Bengali-friendly territories.

You can follow the film’s activities on their Facebook page.
