Hou Hsiao-Hsien’s The Assassin Trailer with English Subtitles

After the acclaim it earned fave arthouse Taiwanese director (Best Director) at the latest edition of the Cannes Film Festival, Hou Hsiao-Hsien’s got a high definition trailer with English subtitles!

The Pan-China-French co-production budgeted at nearly $15M USD (¥90M RMB [1]) is a historical action drama based on a story of the Tang Dynasty (circa the 9th century) starring Hou’s longtime muse Shu Qi as a the kidnapped daughter of a general who was trained to become an assassin by a Daoist nun, and sent to kill her fated betrothed cousin (Chang Chen).

The cast is rounded up by Chinese actress Zhou Yun, Japanese actor Satoshi Tsumabuki, Taiwanese actor Ethan Ruan, Taiwanese actress Nikki Hsin-Ying Hsieh and Taiwanese actress Fang-yi Sheu.

The Assassin (聶隱娘) is expected to open in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong between August 27-28th, with possible roll outs in other East-Asian cities in September, and a West release for next year because distribution sucks.
