Hansal Mehta’s Aligarh Trailer with English Subtitles

EROSNOW has released the trailer of Hansal Mehta’s Aligarh after it, apparently, was given an A Certificate (for adult audiences) by the Indian Censor Board [1], despite the fact that there’s no intimate scenes during the film. As far as I know, the Indian Censor Board — as with most content rating organizations — can be asinine with their standards. But is anyone surprised? [1][2]

Aligarh, which had its debut at last year’s Busan International Film Festival, is a film based on the real life incident of Dr. Shrinivas Ramchandra Siras (played by Manoj Bajpai, aka. Manoj Bajpayee), a university professor at Aligarh Muslim University, who was suspended from his job because of his sexual orientation in 2010 when Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (introduced during the British rule), which criminalizes sexual activities “against the order of nature” (including homosexual acts),  had already been declared unconstitutional.

The film also stars Rajkummar Rao.

Will update when a YouTube trailer is available.

Let’s remember that in 2013, the Supreme Court of India backtracked the decision of the Delhi High Court, reinstating Section 377 and making homosexuality in the country illegal again.

Aligarh is set to open in India on February 26th.
