Tyler, The Creator – Tamale MV (NSFW)

Again, I know it’s been an almost unforgivable amount of time since my last MV post, but when Tyler, the Creator releases the video for one of my favorite tracks of 2013, I sorta, kinda, have an obligation to make sure the whole world knows about it. That’s right. From his highly acclaimed album Wolf comes  the video for Tamale, one of the album’s more obviously explicit tracks (if that’s even possible). And though most who know the Odd Future creator and front man may think he’s all acid trips and horror-hop, the truth is the man knows how to do social commentary like no other. It seems that old adage “the poet is political” is never more relevant than when in the hands of Tyler and his alter-ego, Wolf Haley (whose own id Golf Wang makes an appearance in the video).

Tyler makes it perfectly clear he means to offend and educate. It’s his duty as an artist — whether he’ll admit it or not. He takes humor and turns it into blunt commentary on the double standard of the good ol’ US of ‘Murrica. Then he ends the song perfectly with the first verse of one of his most personal songs on the album, Answer, with a cameo from song producer Pharrell Williams — looking, as one comment on YouTube observed, “serious as fuck.” I must say, there are very few who know how to blend the political, satirical, ridiculous, and emotional as well as Tyler does here. “The Creator”, indeed.

As unexpected as my path was to loving all things weird, more unexpected is my ability to get attention for writing about the stuff.
