Girl’s Day – Female President

Girl’s Day is one of the many South Korean girl groups the country’s entertainment industry dishes out weekly (or daily) since the Korean Wave started gaining strength. And though the girl group market is pretty fixated in my brain already — with Brown Eyed Girls topping, followed by SunnyHill and 2NE1, and perhaps  a weakness for TINY-G… and for the past month, a weakness for Girls’ Generation (Yes, finally, you guys!), I decided to check out Girl’s Day’s latest single simply because… it was titled Female President (여자 대통령).

Though Hilary Clinton ISN’T the first female American politician to run for president (Victoria Woodhull [1] in 1872?) and Iceland picked Vigdís Finnbogadóttir to be their president in 1980 and Corazon Aquino became the first female president in Asia in 1986, it’s still a BIG deal to talk about the gender of our elected candidates. Especially when we talk about American politics — remember the whole drama with the “Bitch is the new black.” [1] quote Tina Fey launched during the whole Hilary/Obama race? And I’m not even American. LOL

There’s been quite a few female presidents this past decade, even if it only seems to be “big news” when American journalists pick up the items, like Latvia’s Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga, Panama’s Mireya Moscoso, Finland’s Tarja Halonen (who, by the way, is also LGBT — if you must know), Philippines’ Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Indonesia’s Megawati Sukarnoputri, Liberia’s, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Chile’s Michelle Bachelet, India’s Pratibha Patil, Argentina’s Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, Lithuania’s Dalia Grybauskaitė, Kyrgyzstan’s Roza Otunbayeva, Costa Rica’s Laura Chinchilla, Brazil’s Dilma Rousseff, Kosovo’s Atifete Jahjaga, Malawi’s Joyce Banda.

All an array of good and bad politicians ;)

The latest to join the gang, is… of course, Park Geun-hye — South Korea’s spanking new president. JYJ was even involved in the inaugural ceremony [1].

The song, sadly, isn’t really about a female president. It’s just a song to empower girls to not sit around waiting for guys to give the first step, but to go for it saying “you love him,” and to go and “kiss him first” — yes, because that’s how president Park Geun-hye did it ;P

To quote on Pink:

What happened to the dream of the girl president? She’s dancing in the video next to 50 Cent.

Female President is included in the re-packaged edition of their debut full length album, Expectation (기대), easily titled Female President (of course!).
