Coldplay featuring Rihanna – Princess of China

‎I’ll admit that I enjoyed Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto for the most part. However, I actually thought that one song really felt out of place on their album. Guess which one it is?

Ta-da!

Yep, Princess of China, which features Rihanna of all people (sorry, but I’m not a fan of hers).

I’m pretty sure that everyone expected a music video out of the song given Rihanna’s involvement in it. And I’m aware that it took quite some time for the video to finally happen. It isn’t terrible by any means because the video actually looks pretty good from a visual standpoint. However, Princess of China feels like it’s out of place on Mylo Xyloto when compared to every single track on the album.

I have no idea why Coldplay and Rihanna decided to work together, but you can tell by the song that Coldplay had to mold themselves to Rihanna’s voice through the electropop element. In my opinion, it doesn’t work that well for either party involved.

The music video was directed by Adria Petty & Alan Bibby. Ninjas, battles, desserts and dancers are involved. Enjoy the video and song if you like Coldplay and/or Rihanna.

The video is good-looking, even though it looks like a mishmash of different wushu and Chinese epic war movies xD (Check the Sorcerer and the White Snake hahaha). I wish they had used some other less generic typography for the Chinese text, though. I wasn’t a big fan of Coldplay’s album in general, but I agree that the song felt more Rihanna than Chris Martin.

You should check Wang Leehom’s Open Fire MV xD

BTW, this is the first time I’ve actually seen serious discussion on a MV in YinYueTai LOL – it’s the usual “good looking video, RIRI looks good” xD with the “Hero, House of Flying Daggers and many Zhang Yimou films are popular international.” In my opinion the video doesn’t look as good as a Zhang Yimou film, though.

The most interesting comment was one that was talking about the song itself. Even though it was already a song in the album, it seems like they would have liked a rearrangement of the song using Chinese elements. xD

In any case, since they took SO LONG to release this video (another way Asia spoils you LOL), they could’ve arranged a collab with Jay Chou or Leehom or any Chinese musician that does Chinese-styled compositions, and get them to rearrange the song to make it fresher. I mean, fresher than a year-old song chosen as single xD
