Unmasking the Legends – Interview with YB

During your down time between albums what does everyone do? Do any of the other members have solo projects like Do-Hyun?

Scott: Outside YB stuff, what do we do? (to DH)

Do-Hyun: Skateboarding, and climbing mountains with cycles. MTV, actually I like extreme sports. It’s pretty dangerous, but that’s the point. Why I do it, I love that. Yeah. And our drummer is a surfer. He’s a really nice surfer. He’s always looking for a chance, if he can go to sea.

Scott: Tae-Hee and Jin, they do more music stuff. They do other music for things as well.

Do-Hyun: Also Tae-Hee, he likes dancing. Dancing with the girls…*pauses*I don’t want to destroy

Scott: Yeah, we don’t want to destroy Tae-Hee in the interview. I like to, I’m actually an artist, a painter. So I just like anything to do with visual stuff. And just making things. I’m always trying to get back to painting things, but YB is always busy.

Do-Hyun: If you see his pictures, AMAZING. *claps hands and looks at Scott* Ok, give me the money!

Scott: You have to buy a painting. That’s the way it works.

Do-Hyun, your guitar is very unique and iconic to you, can you tell me more about it?

Do-Hyun: Yes, that’s the only one in the world. It’s a custom guitar. Actually we have an instrument crew.

Scott: You know santa has elves, we have that as well.

Do-Hyun: They’re called the Wright Bros.

Scott: Same as those guys who fly?

Do-Hyun: Yeah, same as those Wright Brothers. So they made for me, this really trusting guitar, and it’s really fit with me. Cuz I’m singing with the guitar, and this is kind of uncomfortable sometimes, *shows position* so that crew put every effect inside the guitar. It’s really, really cool.

What is your opinion on the rapidly growing rock & indie scene lately in Korea? Do you feel that rock music is growing in popularity?

Scott: Korean rock scene: condition. That’s my interpretation of what we’re talking about. It’s weird. It’s like, you can say it’s growing, it’s developing, but it’s not mainstream. And it’s not as big as it is in the west.

Do-Hyun: It’s really tough. You know there’s many bands, many types, and it’s really cool. There’s many styles, it’s broad and various but still rock scene is not mainstream and small.

Scott: You know the K-Pop thing is just an industry monster, and that effect on culture is quite dangerous. You know we’re always trying to promote rock bands and our friends. You know sometimes in the west bands get really competitive, it’s more supportive in Korea. Because they know that like, we all need to kind of like group together.

Do-Hyun: You know but I don’t want to say a negative so, I want to say if you want to do it just do it. In the future nobody knows, only God knows [what will happen.]

Scott: If you’ve got it inside you then it doesn’t really matter about the scene..

Do-Hyun: concentrate on making music. That’s it.
