The 5 Most Interesting Uses of Food in MVs

#5 No Doubt – Don’t Speak

Though the nectarine only makes a small cameo at the beginning and end (with small shots at the tail end of the video), the significance of it is quite powerful. The bitter fruit, a representation of the newness and raw energy of the band, is suddenly infested with maggots as the focus becomes the fame (Gwen’s popularity, more specifically) rather than the music. The fruit is then corrupted, the only thing the audience is able to see being the smooth surface on one side. However, turn the fruit over and you see a gaping maw riddled with larvae.

#4 Peter Gabriel – Sledgehammer

Though I wasn’t even born when this video came out, I did manage to see it one night when I was relatively young. I literally thought to myself, “What in all things ridiculous…?!” I mean, stop-motion, bright colors, dancing raw chicken, and Peter Gabriel… made out of food? It’s a fun MV with a wide array of images to make any young kid feel like Peter Gabriel is the greatest thing on the face of the planet, never mind the fact that he was part of one of the greatest bands of all time.

As unexpected as my path was to loving all things weird, more unexpected is my ability to get attention for writing about the stuff.

  1. aw shoot I forgot – I don’t think they’ve shown a lot of food in their music videos, but the rap group Calle 13 tends to mention food nonstop in hilarious and often dirty contexts.

I’m just gonna post the links we had for research…
Not exactly a video, but Shonen Knife has a bunch of food-related song, like Sushi Bar[clip].
But this one is totally a music video and song about Bacon[MV]. BACON!!! I’m gonna have some bacon xD
This is part of a movie, but the VBQ (vegetarian bbq) song from McDull Alumni is PRICELESS! [clip]. You know something is great when the musical number begins with entering an oven, it has children in bunny rabbit outfits (awwwww) and a girl brandishing her machete or Chinese cooking knife. xD

OK Go’s music may bore people. Were they ever known for their musical genius anyway? But this toast MV for Last Leaf is pretty cool (yet wasteful).

Also this video for Jesse & Joy for Chocolate.

The poisoning of people through food in Lady Gaga’s Telephone counts?

This Oreskaban song PAPAYA [clip], if my Japanese is… okay… seems to sing about their like for Papaya hahahaha. Don’t they say “Papaya ga suki ga Papaya” or something? xD And then say “Shake it up baby!” even though it sounds like “Shaking a baby” xD~~~~

@amy, Sligtly unrelated, but you know, I’ve never hae papaya before…? I love me some mango, and I’ve heard a lot of people who love fruit really can’t stand papaya. But it looks so pretty and sweet… HaHa.

Of course, I’ll most DEFINITELY have to check out this video. God mad love for Japanese anything, so anything they do relating to food just seems right… HaHa.

@Camiele, seriously? I gotta admit, papaya has a distinct flavor, so I get why some people might not like it. I like Papaya better in juice than actually having to eat the fruit. My favorite fruits are banana (in anything… cupcakes, pancakes, bread, milkshake, ice cream… you name it!) and mango (in juice, ice cream, sorbet… but mango is best as fruit xD).

Obviously I’m gonna have to check out ALL of these videos. I’m not particularly fond of Gaga or OK Go. But, I’ll check the MVs to see something interesting… HaHa. Thanks for all the suggestions! :D
