Julili: A Life in Music

2005 – PCD (Pussycat Dolls)

Until now one of the most fun years I’ve had. I graduated from the army and then went on a trip half-way around the world. I moved to Malmö (Alex, I miss u so much!) and then was accepted in to uni. It was one hectic year.

2006 – This may have just been the most awful years in my life. I didn’t listen to music during this year at all. So no album for this year, I got nothing.

2007 – Morning Musume All Singles Complete: 10th Anniversary (Morning Musume)

From here on down it’s going to be only Asian albums on my list. Why? Because it has defined my life for the last four years. Of course, Morning Musume needs to go first — they were my ever first hardcore Asian music love. This album is special because it defines the story of one of the biggest Japanese girl groups that have ever existed. And all my fave songs are in it!

2008 – Mirotic (DBSK)

I don’t think I can ever really explain the importance DBSK has in my life. I am still a bit confused as to how this Korean quintet took my heart and stole it. But stole it they did, and ever since I have been in a DBSK craze.

Also this year is very special because I got to know many of my dear Cassies, got to know some amazing people and made some very beloved friends.

It was the autumn of a lifetime. All the excitement about DBSK making a Korean comeback, everybody obsessing about the style, the look, the sound. Everything going crazier and crazier and then it dropped. It was beyond what we expected, it was beautiful. I want 2008 to come back and stay forever.

2009 – The Secret Code (Tohoshinki/DBSK)

I was more a fan of DBSK/Tohoshinki’s Japanese songs. But this album is special because this was the year me and Thau decided that we were going to see DBSK live. After a lot of griefe and stress, there we were, in Nagoya screaming and crying our eyes out.

This year showed me that nothing is impossible, and that I can always attain what I want as long as I work hard enough. I guess I owe DBSK a whole lot, even me doing this, being the editor of YAM.

2010 – Lucifer (SHINee)

Not at all one of my favorite albums of this year, but I needed to add SHINee to this list. After the huge let down of DBSK, SHINee has managed to keep my Kpop love going on. Somehow I started to really, really like them. Their music makes me stupidly happy.

Kpop is still going on strong in my life although it’s starting to slow down a whole lot. But it’s still defining my life right now and I like it. Kpop somehow keeps me sane.

—————————————————

So this concludes my life in music. It took me two months to get this list done. Much thanks to the fact that I own too much music and because it was a pain to cut some albums off the list. And as I look at the list, I laugh at how random it is. But every single album here has a special meaning to me. The songs, the artists — they have followed me throughout my life and have many times helped me through some bad stuff. Mostly, the music has helped me smile when all I wanted was to cry (sorry for the emo).

Before you ask, yes, I do own every album on this list.

I wonder how the list is going to expand as I get older. I look forward to it.

Music is all I do: I work in music, I write about music, I listen to music.

I just want to stress how hard this was for me. I had to cut off some amazing albums! Robbie Williams, 2Pac, Pink, Jay-Z! It was stressful!

I could ttly make a list of all the albums I had to cut off! >_<

I think every latin person has at least some memory of Juan Gabriel. LOL Oh, and you know what songs kind reminds me to What’s Up? That song of What if God was one of us hahahaha.

And I couldn’t add any of the Hanson albums in my list, but I own almost all their studio stuff, but after listening to their acoustic version of Middle of Nowhere (which they did to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the album in 2007), I haven’t been able to listen to the 1997 version. Yeah, it’s THAT good.

And I love Kent thanks to YOU. xD

Also… I dunno about the Pussycat Dolls man~~~ I just. xD

@amy, Dude… PCD was just cus in 2005, that was mah sexiest year ever. Plus that you can’t deny that PCD was produced really well. Why it’s only Nicole singing baffles me, all the girls could sing really well.

Interesting read! Always curious to follow people’s lives through music.

Now I can’t stop thinking about what I’d put on my list! Perhaps a project for the end of the summer…

Great list, I love it for the most part! I think I really wanted to use like 5-7 of your picks for my list.

  7. Julili says:

@Rodrigo, Aw! But Hanson is so good! No shame there! ;D

    • Rodrigo says:

@Julili, A year or two after I bought the album (I really did), the shame started to kick in. I don’t know if I ever want to go back and listen to it one day at the price of scarring my brain.

@Monica Lorenzo, Omg Prima! Thanks for commenting! Appreciate it! How would your list include?

  9. So, most of your CDs are from the 80s? You were born a year before me…how is it possible that you have so many albums from the 80s…HaHa! I suppose I’m not one to talk…many of the CDs I have come DECADES BEFORE I was born…HaHa.

As far as Madonna goes, my favourite song of hers is “Take a Bow” –one of the most powerfully beautiful ballads of all time. My second favourite is “Human Nature”. But, in terms of overall songs that I love, yes, Like a Prayer is that album!!! I suppose Ray of Light comes second (I love the MVs from that album and “Frozen” is just a bad ass track!)

Speaking on MJ….gotta say my favourites of his are Off the Wall and HIStory (truly one of hte most underrated albums of all time, and that’s saying something considering it’s an album from probably the most recognised human being on the face of the planet). Though bad had two of my MJ faves (“Another Part of Me” and “Leave Me Alone”), it wasn’t really one of my favourite albums by him.

I’ve said too much. Get me talking about music and there’s no doubt that I’ll go on for DAYS nonstop!
