Heading Across the Pond – Interview With Patients

In late April you released your second full length album, 18. Can you tell us a little about the recording process for this one? It took you awhile to make another full length CD.

Our first full-length album, Kitsch Space, came out in 2011 so it did take us a while to make our sophomore album.  But between albums we changed our lineup and brought Hyuckjang on board, and we’ve been working hard to make fun and interesting songs with our bass, keyboards, and drums set up.  We started recording 18 in the fall of 2014 after completing our Taiwan tour and finished the album this past spring.  We put a lot of time into making the album and we’re really happy with how things turned out.  We hope other people are too!

You’ve had a lot of lineup up changes, what do you think keeps Patients coming back stronger and stronger?

We try to have the mindset that when a new member joins Patients we have to work even harder so that past members will see us in the future and be really proud that they were once a part of the band.  I think this helps make us stronger.

When you added Hyuckjang to the band, you drastically changed your sound, what was the biggest challenge with that change?

Replacing a guitarist with a keyboardist kind of put us in uncharted territory as there are not a lot of bands out there that are made up of a bassist, keyboardist, and drummer.  So we’ve spend a lot of time working together to create music that we’re all happy with.  Something we’ve really tried to strengthen since Hyuckjang joined is the communication between all members of our band.  Being able to openly communicate with each other is important to everyone enjoying being in Patients.  Loving what we do is more important to us than being successful.  And the best way to make sure everyone is happy with what we’re doing with Patients is to spend time together sharing our ideas and thoughts.
