Midnight in Paris (dir. Woody Allen)
Midnight in Paris is a magical film by Woody Allen that not only struck each one of our hearts when watching on our own, but also had the widest appeal within the YAM Magazine family. Regardless of everyone’s tastes, something about the world Allen created manages to reach out into the nostalgic side of us all. Whether it was thanks to the music, the characters, or the sheer beauty of the film, it’s clear to see that each one of us hopes to have a midnight of our own in the lovely city of Paris.
A very interesting mix of films. I still need to see We Need to Talk About, Shame, 50/50, and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. Though it looks like I will need to track down both Sunny and Caterpillar as well.
@CS, I really recommend those two movies. According to me, those are the among the best Asian releases of this year.
aww midnight in paris! that film makes me so happy. while i didn’t like super 8 or tree of life, there were some good ones on this list. Thanks for sharing!
@Candice Frederick, I can understand not liking Tree of Life, but what’s wrong with Super 8 for you? I thought it was pretty entertaining and surprisingly great.

I am a little surprised that Midnight made it to number one, but at the same time I am not.
@Julyssa, I think it was the movie with most distribution within our picks. For example, more people would have voted for Drive (I think) if they had seen it.
I haven’t seen most of these movies! D: I have some catching up to do!

@ghost, I bet that if the rest of the YAM team voted, Sunny wouldn’t have made it there. But at least I’m glad that Harry Potter didn’t got to be part of the list. :)
@Rodrigo, but that’s because not enough people are watching Sunny ;D LOL
@amy, Re-visiting my point about Sunny… I think I would have voted for it if I’ve seen it and if it stands better against the “supposed to be great” films that I haven’t seen yet (Shame, Help, Shelter, etc.). But then we could have had cases like Juan who liked it, but not so much.
It could be a 50/50 thing. Film versus voters.
@Rodrigo, Don’t diss my Korean entertainment or we will have issues.
@Julyssa, I’m willing to give Sunny a shot if you want me to. But if we all had access to every single film worldwide, would Sunny crack in or not? It all comes down to voters, availability, taste and memory for rankings.

actually, Submarine v Drive as number one favourite. Submarine was made in 2010 but came out in UK this year.

I’m so shame faced. As of 25 December, I’ve only seen two films this year…I think, because I don’t even remember the first one I saw. Wow!
Seriously, I think I need to see La Piel que Habito. One of my favourite singers does (or is featured on) the soundtrack — Buika! Anyway, let’s hope next year’s a better year for film for me :(
Totally agree that Drive was one of the best films of 2011. Good to see it take such a high spot. I actually preferred the film to Midnight In Paris but both were excellent.
I was glad to see Gary Oldman nominated for his role in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy which was another favourite from the year.
@Dan, I gotta admit – the second time I saw Drive… it wasn’t as good as the first time, so it’s actually dropped from my ranking a bit haha. Haven’t had the time to re-watch Midnight in Paris, so I have no idea how it compares to my first time though.
And… I gotta admit, I was bored with Tinker Tailor, but I’m glad Oldman is nominated all the same.
