UFC and Super Bowl made me listen to two songs that I really hate
Move forward to Sunday. NBC, the New York Giants against the New England Patriots. Most of the YAM Magazine team doesn’t give a shit about American football. However, even those who hate it were looking forward to this year’s Super Bowl for different reasons: Madonna’s performance, the commercials… or in Mirella’s case, the recent trailer for The Avengers.
Me? I spent my time watching the pilot for HBO’s Luck — starring Dustin Hoffman and recent Academy Award nominee Nick Nolte — and catching up on Showtime’s The Big C — starring Laura Linney as a cancer patient. Shortly after watching both shows, I managed to tune in just in time to see Madonna’s performance.
Despite her age, she looked great on stage and even resembled Ozymandias from Watchmen earlier on with her Egyptian-esque outfit during the Vogue segment. The mini-concert was visually stunning and pretty entertaining to watch despite the blatant lip syncing, which is a bad trait for most pop stars when they perform live. I loved Cee Lo Green showing up and the live performance for her recent single, Give Me All Your Luvin’ (feat. Nicki Minaj and M.I.A.), was pretty fun to watch. Unfortunately, Madonna’s performance had one big taint: LMFAO.
Seriously, why the hell did they have to appear along with the Queen of Pop?

Madonna is still a huge draw on her own and doesn’t need those jackasses near her at all. Unfortunately, most of the world enjoys Party Rock Anthem [MV]. TV shows such as 2 Broke Girls (CBS) and Glee (Fox) used it last year. 2BG used it as part of a flashmob scene that Max (Kat Dennings) thankfully put to an end, reflecting on how I (and many others, I believe) feel about that song. Glee used it for Sam’s (Chord Overstreet) return to the show, working as a stripper.
But what’s done is done and we can’t reverse time. Overall, I won’t trash Madonna because she’s still got talent and her Super Bowl performance was a lot better to watch than the Super Bowl performance from the Black Eyed Peas, who raped Guns N’ Roses’ Sweet Child of Mine as well as having will.i.am being a selfish bastard for not sharing the auto-tune with Fergie.

Madonna somehow made me watch the rest of the football match — the Giants defeated the Pats again in the same way they did in 2008, lol. Anyways, I hope that MDNA ends up being a good album, or at least puts out good singles. And if she tours around South America, I’m most likely checking her out live.
If I Catch You is a painful song, and even though the Portuguese version is… understandable if you speak Spanish, it’s easier to digest. Ah… the beauty of not understanding lyrics.
I really don’t know if I would go to Madonna’s concert – depends a lot on the ticket prices for me. xD
@amy, Yeah, I can imagine Telo fans being disappointed with the English version since it makes people feel second-hand embarrasment for him.
As for the beauty of not understanding lyrics, I can see how it works for some people. But at the same time, I feel like it’s a cheap thing to do.
As for Madonna, prices would be way too high, as expected. Like somewhere between Elton and Paul for prices.
@Rodrigo, it’s not a cheap thing to do. It’s a natural thing to do, you’re in for the music, not what they are trying to say to you. ;)
Once you take the time to listen to the song, you can dissect it and decide whether you like the lyrics or not. If you love the lyrics (which happens to me a lot in Chinese music), all the better.
I think is really funny the general American public expect artists to write their own songs, so they look down a lot on the people who don’t. But then again, you also have to take into consideration the intricacies of language. Writing a song in English might be easier to do than writing one in Mandarin, even if you think you can speak Mandarin. Conversational Mandarin isn’t meant to be written for songs, and university-leveled Mandarin isn’t even meant to be written for songs. So why cheapen a perfectly good song even if you don’t understand the lyrics? xD
Generally speaking, the only people that are writing good lyrics in English are country music lyricists and Adele. LOL
Telo should be off the hook for that one… unless I find someone to tell me it’s the best song of the year because it’s so deep and meaningful. xD
Having said all of these… I didn’t watch the superbowl. I’ve never done it and I probably never will. hahahaha.
@amy, I can see your point. But things get lost into translation and might not allow to get a full grasp on things. Telo’s song suffers from translation and the original is okay at best. Try and put an English version of 2NE1’s “I Am The Best” the way it stands lyrics-wise and that song would lose most of its impact (or at least a good part of it).
Writing a song is possible as long as you’re fluent with a language. Mandarin would be complicated for the reasons you mention.

@Julyssa, HaHa. A-MEN! Though, I gotta say I was never a fan of American football anyway and haven’t been interested in the half time show for about five years. So, I guess I don’t have any real space to talk about hating so hard on something… HaHa.
