Top30 Favorite Film Discoveries of 2013

2. Sanjay Leela Bhansali

The one and only cheat option on this list. I just couldn’t make my mind for just one Bhansali movie because he’s become one of my favorites- call it “love at first movie watch.” Each and every frame in a Bhansali film is is the most marvelous visual candy worth the highest definition that you’ll be able to get.

And thank you, Rani, once again~ every bit and piece of Best Actress recognition that you got for Black was more than well deserved.

1. The Cranes Are Flying

After adding the film to my list of To Watch Movies only because of the title, I finally caught The Cranes Are Flying when I discovered the Mosfilm YouTube Channel. I was blown away by the visuals and themes dealt, and ended up watching another Mikhail Kalatozov (I Am Cuba), but I wasn’t taken by it.

The Cranes Are Flying, however, has passed the test of time.

I’m still looking forward to seeing a few more Tatyana Samoylova movies, but since I find it difficult to catch a lot subtitled Russian material, it’s hindered my disposition to consume. However, I have bought a Russian dictionary and have been making my way through the Cyrillic alphabet [status: rusty reading, but reading]. I don’t see that going anywhere in the near future, though.

It’ll be interesting to see Anna Karenina from the Russian POV, instead of Greta Garbo’s, Sophie Marceau’s or Keira Knightley’s. That’s also probably the easiest to get my hands on.

[Watch the Movie]

I wonder what I’ll discover this 2014.

@Jenna, I find Telugu movies hard to find if they’re not on YouTube. I’m gonna watch some Ram Charan films when I find the time.

Great list, and yes, very Indian film heavy. But there are a lot of good films on that list! I see a few on there from other countries I have to check out now. :)

@Jenna, except for both the titles in Spanish, everything else is quite easy to find with subtitles. I’m actually surprised Maria Felix films are so hard to find.
