The Fangirly Diary of a Geek Girl: To me, she’s royalty

THURSDAY

Star Wars: Episode VIII is the most anticipated 2017 movie, according to a fan survey conducted by Fandango. I’m sure it was anticipated because it is Star Wars, but now it will also be a tribute to dearly departed Carrie Fisher. Still, Disney has the top 3 titles with MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in second, and its live-action Beauty and the Beast, with Emma Watson, in third place.

Anyway, check out this new picture of the fourth most anticipated film, Wonder Woman, which features Gal Gadot running through WWI trenches amidst some explosions. Director Patty Jenkins talked about said setting:

My approach was to focus on telling the story of mechanised war and how that would look to a god visiting our world for the first time. I wanted the audience to understand the horrors that a war on this scale makes possible and how shocking that would be to someone who comes with a strong sense of honour and justice. She doesn’t realise yet just how senselessly dark the world can be.

FRIDAY

Disney has released a sneak peek of Emma Watson singing “Something There” as Belle in the live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast. Not bad at all, even if she sounds quite edited.

James Mangold talked about Logan, how it’s different from other superhero movies (“powerful drama about interesting character”), how it’s a movie for grown-ups and “an attempt to kind of bring an end to Hugh’s kind of amazing performance as Wolverine”.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is currently the third highest-grossing domestic film of 2016, with over $375 million. The only films on top of it are Finding Dory and Captain America: Civil War, which earned $486 and $408 respectively. As it is, I don’t think it will be that hard for Rogue One to reach those numbers once by the time it ends its run. As for international box office, it is basically at $700 million, so not too shabby. Get (even more) money, Disney!

Finally, Mark Hamill once again made me tear up, talking about his memories of Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds, and making me miss awesome people who I didn’t know personally but I felt, through his words, that I would have love to:

They were both really mothering types, both opinionated and determined. Carrie’s mom was like everybody’s mom. If you were in her house, Debbie was your mother. She gave you advice, and fixed your collar, and said, ‘Why did you wear a brown belt with black shoes?’ In many ways, Debbie was the optimist. She has a spring in her step and is really upbeat and has all the qualities you associate with her, and Carrie would be shuffling around in a bathrobe and slippers muttering under her breath. So cynical! It was a real Felix-and-Oscar disparity between their personalities, and yet in many, many ways they were alike. She was fiercely protective of her mother and her mother’s legacy.

And that’s it for the week. Before I go, I want to wish Happy Birthday to Stan Lee, Nichelle Nichols, Maggie Smith, Noomi Rapace, Diego Luna and Jude Law.
