The Fangirly Diary of a Geek Girl: Swords, bites and detectives!

THURSDAY

Benedict Cumberbatch wasn’t there to accept his Top TV Detective award at the National Television Awards, but he sent a nice message… and we got to see his legs in fetching red board shorts~

J. August Richards as Mike Peterson is “Deathlok” in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.; yeah comic book nerds already knew it. Did I? Nah, I’m not THAT much of a nerd. Also, here are some details on Sif’s role. Yep, the shieldmaiden will come to Earth to track down Lorelei, a villain sorceress who is also the sister of Amora The Enchantress, a beautiful villain who always wants to date rape Thor.

Executive producer Simon Kinberg talks about the new Star Wars TV series called Star Wars Rebels. Apparently, not only will “it… look quite different from Clone Wars, it goes to dark places and embraces the 1977 film’s spirit~

Thematically and politically, it goes to some dark places. But for the tone of the show we took our cues from the original movies, which had fun and adventure and swashbuckling with emotion and grounded human characters. We took all our cues from the original films.

Still super sad over this. Quentin Tarantino had planned to film the whole of The Hateful Eight using 70mm film. And it would have been more intimate, taking place almost entirely within two locations: a bounty hunter’s stagecoach and a haberdashery.

FRIDAY

OMG! Tom Hiddleston prepares for Coriolanus at Donmar Warehouse, and it is glorious. Gurl, look at that body!

There will be a Harry Potter expansion at Universal Orlando! Here are some details from “Escape from Gringotts” ride revealed with new Diagon Alley details. Also, the idea of a ride with said name makes me giddy… and then sad because, once more, maldita pobreza!

Let’s talk Avengers! Joss Whedon says The Godfather: Part II is his “Guiding Star” for The Avengers: Age of Ultron. To which I say, hell yeah!

The model I’m always trying to build from, or my guiding star, is The Godfather: Part II where a ton has happened in-between and it’s a very different movie [from Part I], but you don’t need any information. It’s there in the film about what’s happened since, what’s different, and why is this a different film; why is it a different kind of structure, and why is it darker. […] Obviously I’m talking about one of the greatest films ever made (The Godfather: Part II)… I hope mine will be good, but that is my guiding star.

Talking about The Avengers: Age of Ultron, they are going global! Not only will they shoot in the United Kingdom and South Africa, the movie will shoot in Italy and South Korea too. Gangnam Style, yo!

Gareth Evans, director of crazy-awesome looking The Raid 2, would be up for directing an Iron Fist movie; but it’d have to be rated R. He ain’t gonna direct a kiddie film, yo!

My big thing right now is figuring out how to do that action style – and would someone like Marvel let me do a R-rated movie? This isn’t me going against PG-13 movies, it’s just that the way I shoot action, it doesn’t need to be bloody or aggressive or ‘stabby stabby’ with knives, but it’s about when someone swings a punch and there’s a connection there, I’m not going to hide that with a camera.

Ending this on a not-so-good note, damn, cannot believe that Rupert Sanders could direct a Live Action Ghost in the Shell Movie. The hell is this? Snow White and the Huntsman ain’t that good! Why does he get to direct a movie with such awesome material!

And that it for the week. Before I go, I want to wish Happy Birthday to Takeshi Kitano, Dave Bautista, David Lynch, Evan Peters, Tom Baker, Geena Davis, John Hurt, and Jim Jarmusch!

  1. I was actually ok with the new look of the Powerpuff Girls. The actual special was up and down in terms of writing quality (though the voices all returned great), but once I got used to the shading and movement I even found a few pretty moments. I know I’m in a very small minority in that opinion, though, and my friends who are more knowledgeable about cartoons weren’t into it.
