The Fangirly Diary of a Geek Girl: Step into the spotlight!

Greetings, fellow fangirls and fanboys! Wonder Woman has had a wonderful time (and will keep having it for many more days), but this week was Marvel’s time to shine with Black Panther! Also some comicbook movie rumors and a magical first look. Here’s how the week started:

SATURDAY

Remember that Neill Blomkamp’s Alien 5 film? Yeah, it is totally dead now. But hey, we might get a District 9 sequel tho! While I feel sad for no more Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley… OMG, Christopher Johnson might be back!

SUNDAY

Wonder Woman killed it at the domestic box office with a $100.5 million opening weekend. That’s more than the domestic opening of Iron Man ($98.6M), Doctor Strange ($85M) and Thor ($65.7M), but less than Deadpool ($132M) and Man of Steel ($116M).

MONDAY

Check out this lovely featurette on Mija, the young action hero of Netflix’s Okja!

I’m not much of a fan of Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why, but I did wonder what the hell is season 2 going to be about. Showrunner Brian Yorkey had a synopsis of sorts:

Hannah told her version of events, but there are at least 12 kids who have another version of those events that we actually haven’t really heard from yet. So I think there’s quite a bit more of Hannah’s story to tell. I don’t think Hannah told any untruths on her tape but I think she told her story and she reclaimed her narrative which had really been taken from her. She reclaimed the narrative, ‘This is the story of my life and this is why it ends.’ But there are other people who might want to tell that story differently or who are players in that story who might have a different perspective on some of those events.

It seems we will not only get a second season of Jessica Jones (currently shooting) and Luke Cage (filming a little later this year) in 2018, but a third season of Daredevil too. It hasn’t been confirmed by Marvel or Netflix, but Entertainment Weekly claimed it will hit the streaming service next year… and EW is pretty legit!

Someone is still bitter he didn’t get invited to Captain America: Civil War. Check out Chris Hemsworth being exceedingly cute in this fun behind-the-scenes video from Avengers: Infinity War, where he smashes action figures of Thor’s team-mates.

If you watched Wonder Woman (and if not, go watch it, dammit), you know the best battle scene is the one where Wonder Woman goes through No Man’s Land and does in a day what mere mortals couldn’t do in a year… and that scene almost didn’t make the cut because “scene that made the least sense to other people going in”, according to Patty Jenkins.

I think that in superhero movies, they fight other people, they fight villains. So when I started to really hunker in on the significance of No Man’s Land, there were a couple [of] people who were deeply confused, wondering, like, ‘Well, what is she going to do? How many bullets can she fight?’ And I kept saying, ‘It’s not about that. This is a different scene than that. This is a scene about her becoming Wonder Woman.’
