The Fangirly Diary of a Geek Girl: Let’s Talk About X~

FRIDAY

Olivia Munn had such delightful things to say about her character Psylocke and latex costume in X-Men: Apocalypse. Also, her costume popped at the crotch are on the first day. Yay~

Psylocke’s outfit or uniform or suit or whatever you want to call it is very sexual. I’ve got like my thigh-highs and a halter, but the thing about that, and that was important, is that it doesn’t matter what I’m wearing as long as we’re all aware of who she is. She’s very strong and she’s very lethal and she’s very powerful, and it doesn’t really matter what she’s wearing as long as you have that strength and that presence.

Taling about said movie, Ian McKellen compared Superman to the X-Men, and not in a favorable way. Damn, Sir Ian, shots fired!

Well, [director Bryan Singer] persuaded me. X-Men was about something. Superman isn’t really about anything. It’s a joke. The nerd changes his underpants and becomes a Superman. That’s James Bond: “Shaken, not stirred,” silly, stupid, British twit… and then, Action Man! But X-Men is about the problems of being a mutant. And we’ve all felt we’re mutants on occasion. So, that was the hook for me.

On equally sassy but less inflamatory comments, here we have a lovely interview that Collider had with Ian McKellen, that went from Tolkien films, New Zealand nostalgia, sharing a role with Michael Fassbender in X-Men, and wanting to try motion-capture. And of course, Sherlock Holmes! Like does he have a favourite?

Well, yes I suppose I do: Jeremy Brett; he was an English actor who was on television quite a long time ago, these were straightforward, (Sir Anthony) Conan Doyle stories, but he discovered the dark side of the character. He wasn’t just a suave know-all, he was a deeply troubled man, and he caught on to the fact that Sherlock was too much brain, too little heart. I feel some sympathy in that.

Director Peyton Reed talked about Ant-Man, and the importance of The Wasp in the film. There’s also talk about the used trope of competent female character is upstaged by noobie dude… but with a twist (and kind of a decent reason to be in place).

Wasp was important to me, whether it was Janet or Hope, to have a strong female presence in the movie. Hope was always a character from Edgar [Wright] and Joe [Cornish]’s original draft, but Evangeline [Lilly] and I talked a lot about her arc in the movie, and I loved the idea from the beginning that it IS Ant-Man, it’s about Ant-Man, but the solution to Hank Pym’s issue is right there in front of him the entire time.

Continuing on The Wasp theme, Kevin Feige confirmed that she will have “a very big part” in a Phase 3 film. That must be Avengers: Infinity War, right? Right?!

It’s going to be certainly a part of our Phase 3; some of the films we’ve announced in Phase 3. It is going to be a very important moment [in Ant-Man], and — spoiler alert! — we see that suit for the first time, and her father now is finally giving it to her and realizes that he can’t hold her back from what is essentially her destiny. It’s gonna be a very big part of one of our upcoming films.

So, Marvel announced their plans for the Guardians of the Galaxy themed Phase 2 Box Set. Said what?! Yep, they invited us to “hold the greatest power in the cosmos in the palm of your hand”, which you can pre-order right now. And with this image of the possible prop:

Sam Raimi got asked by MTV what he thinks about the Spider-Man reboot by Marvel (as well as the Marc Webb movies):

I saw [both Marc Webb movies], they’re great. And I’m really glad that Marvel’s taking it to high school. I think that’s gonna be refreshing, and just like my favorite of the Spider-Man comic-books. And I have a lot of faith that they really know their stuff… The difficulty of going through high school is so unique to a superhero. It’s unique and that’s what Spider-Man’s all about, so that they’re gonna explore that head on is very exciting.

Neill Blomkamp shared even more concept art for his Alien movie, depicting Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) and Corporal Hicks (Michael Biehn), via Instagram. Seems the movies is “going very well”.

Matt Smith was at SDCC, promoting many of his future films like Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and Patient Zero. Yep, dude will be in two zombie movies! But he also talked about his small but important role in Terminator Genisys, and his opinion of Peter Calpadi as The Doctor . Yep, it doesn’t matter he left Doctor Who over a year ago: Once a doctor, always a Doctor.

I think he’s completely reinvented it and I think he’s got such wit. I just think he’s a brilliant actor and a brilliant man, actually.

Finally, one last first! Here’s the first X-Files teaser video, which revealed absolutely nothing. OK, some dark times are hinted for Mulder and Scully~

And that’s it for the week. Before I go, I want to wish Happy Birthday to Michelle Rodriguez, Patrick Stewart, Harrison Ford, Jackie Earle Haley, Jane Lynch, Forest Whitaker, Travis Fimmel and Donald Sutherland.
