The Fangirly Diary of a Geek Girl: Here comes the Sorcerer Supreme

THURSDAY

This year Entertainment Weekly’s Summer Movie Preview depicts both sides of Captain America: Civil War battling across four separate covers! EW also gave us a couple of galleries: one is showing us all the players in this battle and why are they so angry; the other is showing all new pictures where every one looks serious or intense (or incredibly attractive like T’Challa).

In this “The Team Vs. Bucky”, we have the famous scene where Tony Stark almost gets shot in the face, also Black Widow punches Bucky in the dick, but hey Panther Saves also wants to kick Bucky’s ass! Oh yeah, Sharon Carter is there too. I’m sorry gal, but you’ll never be as cool as Peggy.

EW also gave us our first look at Scarlett Johansson in Ghost in the Shell. Yep, that’s DreamWorks’s version of Motoko Kusanagi, and some people ain’t happy about that!

In better casting news, Benedict Cumberbatch will voice The Grinch in a new animated film based on the Seuss classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas. At CinemaCon, Illumination Entertainment (Despicable Me and Minions) revealed the film will be release in November 10, 2017. Welp, I hope it’s better than the time they did The Lorax back in 2012.

In a couple of No Shit, Sherlock news, Deadpool 2 was totally confirmed at CinemaCon with Ryan Reynolds as the titular character and Tim Miller returning as director.

The other obvious news is that Warner Bros. Animation & Warner Series President Sam Register confirmed that Batman: The Killing Joke has an R-rating.

The Killing Joke is revered by the fans, particularly for its blunt, often-shocking adult themes and situations. We felt it was our responsibility to present our core audience — the comics-loving community — with an animated film that authentically represented the tale they know all too well.

In Box Office news, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice crossed the $300M at the domestic box office, and yet, for some reason, it still feels like a flop. Must be because it was freaking expensive to make so it needs more money. Also, apprently, the film’s original cut was of nearly 4 hours. What the hell, dudes! Don’t you know how to edit?! They should have just made two movies and be done with it! Editor David Brenner had these excuses:

It was a lot to juggle. So the plot lines of a couple characters had to go. These people are currently in the movie but we don’t track them, and it’s okay. What’s kind of fun is that we went back and did an extended cut where we put a lot of this stuff back, and we refined it into the same rhythm as the theatrical release. So what was once a nearly four-hour cut with absolutely everything was ridiculous – ended up being about a three-hour cut, once all these added story lines were refined with the fat was cut out.

In super geeky game news, behold Jim Henson’s Labyrinth: The Board Game:

Yes, just behold! And if you want more info, here it is.

FRIDAY

We have a new Star Trek Beyond image where Idris Elba (as villainous alien Krall) is choking a member of the Enterprise crew. He also talked some more about his character:

This is a man with a definite purpose. I say a man, but he’s not a man. Or is he? […] What’s interesting about him is that he has a real beef with what the Enterprise stands for. Krall’s a character who’s deeply steeped in hatred — in my opinion, a well-earned hatred — for the Federation.

Chewbacca actor Peter Mayhew has been revealing pages of an earlier script for “The Star Wars”, as it was known in earlier drafts, throughout the year. The pages he revealed this week have some interesting stuff in them! Lightsabers are called “Laser Swords”, and, most importantly, Obi-Wan Kenobi lived through his confrontation with Darth Vader. Bring out those “what if” fanfics!

Tom Hiddleston would sure love a battle between Loki and Doctor Strange. A magic battle!

In some hypothetical world, I don’t quite know when, [I would like] for Loki and Dr. Strange to share the same frame, it would be very exciting indeed. Because Benedict Cumberbatch is an old friend so I would think it would be interesting to see who would get the upper hand.

It’s not as if they haven’t fight each other in comicbooks before. Even back in the day! And you won, Hiddles! Well, Loki did. Also, that coy adorable bastard knows “how many more times I’m going to play Loki, but I’m not going to tell you”. Dammit, Hiddles!

Legendary Comics revealed the cover for Warcraft: Bonds Of Brotherhood, the official prequel to the film, which takes place decades before the movie begins. The graphic novel will release on June 7th, followed by Warcraft‘s release on June 10th.

Here’s the fist look of Civil War II #1, which goes on sale this June. Two prologues will precede the series in May though. First, FCBD Civil War II #1, releasing as part of Free Comic Book Day on May 7. Then, Civil War II #0, releasing later in May. We also got a first look at the “Battle Variants”:

And what’s the fight about? Basically Minority Report: A young Inhuman with the power to profile the future has emerged. The superhuman community is divied between those who want to use him to prevent danger before it happens, and those who want to allow the future to unfold unaltered.

It’s time for TV show news! First, Marvel/Netflix The Defenders has found its showrunners! They are Daredevil Season Two showrunners, Douglas Petrie and Marco Ramirez! Welp, I guess if we get Daredevil Season Three, it will have a different team.

Neil Gaiman will write a Good Omens six-part television series. Gaiman made the announcement at a memorial event for Pratchett, who passed away in March 2015. While Gaiman had previously declined to adapt the novel he co-wrote with Pratchett, there was a posthumous left where Pratchett gave his blessing to his friend to write the series himself. While there has been talk to adapt Good Omens for film and TV before, it has only been adapted by BBC Radio 4 in 2014, with Gaiman and Pratchett appearing in cameos.

Yes, we are getting a new Tales From the Cryptincluding a newly reinvented Crypt Keeper. TNT greenlighted 10 episodes, also announcing a pilot order for anthology series Time of Death, and a development project, Creatures.

Finally, Spike has ordered Stephen King’s The Mist as a ten episodes series, and will begin shooting this year, aiming for a 2017 debut. I am not sure it needs a TV adaptation, considering Frank Darabont’s 2007 feature film was perfection, but oh well.

And that’s it for the week. Before I go, I want to wish Happy Birthday to Daisy Ridley, Charlie Hunnam, Saoirse Ronan, Ron Perlman, Peter Capaldi, Emma Thompson, Luke Evans and Emma Watson.
