The Fangirly Diary of a Geek Girl: Games Assemble!

THURSDAY

Here’s the complete list of the Golden Globe nominations, which includes Mad Max: Fury Road for Best Motion Picture, Drama OMG! Director George Miller got nominated for Best Director. The Martian was nominated for Best Motion Picture, Comedy. Game of Thrones is against my personal fav Outlander for Best TV Series, Drama
. Talking about Outlander, both Caitriona Balfe and Tobias Menzies got nominations for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor, but nothing for Sam Heughan! The hell! Here are more snubs, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Idris Elba is the favorite to play The Gunslinger in the film (posible) franchise adaptation of Stephen King’s 7-book The Dark Tower series. He would square off against Matthew McConaughey, who’s in talks to play the villainous Man in Black. Most of us were quite giddy at the possibility, but some were whining because they wanted a white Gunslinger. As for King himself?

To me, the color of the gunslinger doesn’t matter. What I care about is how fast he can draw…and that he takes care of the ka-tet.

According to Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, the Star Wars standalone films won’t just be prequels or stories about characters we know. But, what I wish she directly answered is if the Boba Fett movie is going to be a sequel.

It just so happens to be Rogue One is the precursor to New Hope and yes, this Han Solo idea but I would not argue that we are setting up any kind of prequel notion with these standalone movies. I think that’s so far just coincidence. And to be perfectly honest, we have changed the order of those at the last minute, so that’s not the intention at all.

OMG! Rumor has it that Cate Blanchett is in talks to be part of Thor: Ragnarok. Who could she be? Enchantress? Hela?

Check out this kinda adorkable character trailer for the Marvel Avengers Academy game. Steve is a bit too jock-y for my tastes (remember that Steve is an artist dammit!), but Thor looks seriously pretty! I want another with more characters, like Ms. Marvel and Squirrel Girl and The Wasp!

FRIDAY

Graphic designer Olly Moss got interviewed by Pottermore to talk about the gorgeous Harry Potter covers he created for the new eBooks. As a massive fan of the book series (who also loves to draw Snape and McGonagall the most because he has impeccable taste, of course), Olly talked about how conscious he was of avoiding visual spoilers:

For Half-Blood Prince I thought maybe I should have a Snape cover but then that could be a horrible spoiler. Really it’s the book; it’s Dumbledore and Harry fighting off the Inferi. That’s such a vibrant image from that book. Also it’s nice to get Dumbledore on a cover.

Not only the new X-Men: Apocalypse trailer was released, but we got a new poster as well. And Apocalypse looks decent for once! Must be the desaturated brooding profile~

We know that X-Men: Days of Future Past‘s Quicksilver display of powers in that one scene was way cooler than anything Avengers: Age of Ultron‘s Quicksilver could do in his more fatal stint. But Bryan Singer ain’t gonna rest on his laurels and worked hard with Evan Peters to top that spectacle in X-Men: Apocalypse. So yeah, they basically took a month and a half to film a 3-minute sequence where Quicksilver does something that must be very, very cool.

There’s one sequence that took one and a half months to shoot for three minutes of film. It involves the most complex camera moves, very sophisticated explosive algorithms, 3D Phantom cameras travelling at 50mph while shooting at 3,100 frames per second. Evan worked more days on this movie than any other actor because of this one sequence.

Talking about directors not wanting to rest on their laurels, James Cameron said he wanted to prove that Avatar success wasn’t “some big fluke”. Currently, dude is still ironing out the kinks on screenplays for the second, third, and fourth installments of Avatar. Yes, that’s quite a bit too much Avatar. Guess we’ll see.

Obviously, expectations are going to be very high on these films, especially on Avatar 2, to make sure it wasn’t just some big fluke the first time. So we’ve got to deliver. I’ve created a nice rod for my own back, so they say.

Finally, here’s the announcement trailer of the third Avenger game of the week, Marvel: Avengers Alliance 2, a mobile sequel to the addictive social game Marvel: Avengers Alliance. I only stopped playing because I threw a huge temper tantrum over not getting Loki despite spending all that time trying to win the freaking challenge… it was probably for the best~

And that’s it for the week. Before I go, I want to wish Happy Birthday to Nicholas Hoult, AnnaSophia Robb, Dominic Monaghan, John Malkovich, Judi Dench and Kenneth Branagh.
