The Fangirly Diary of a Geek Girl: Empowering tomorrow’s superheroes~

THURSDAY

Lo and behold DC Super Hero Girls, where DC realizes that young girls also like superheroes. DC teams up with Mattel and give us toys, books, graphic novels, digital content, apparel and animation for girls who want female empowerment (and have the money to pay for it)! Yes! Equality! Here’s the super cute video of Super Hero High, where we see teenaged versions of heroes and villains alike. I’m not sure how good of an idea is to have Amanda Waller as principal, but she sure gives a nice speech!

If you want to super charge your education, meet super friends and make a super difference the we welcome you to Super Hero High. Super Hero High: empowering tomorrow’s superheroes today.

In other news, OMG Doctor Who will have another spinoff! This one may be more The Sarah Jane Adventures instead of Torchwood tho! It’s called Class and will focus on the students at Coal Hill, where Clara Oswald currently teaches (and where First Doctor companions Barbara and Ian taught), and is set in the world of The Doctor. The debut series will consist of eight 45-minute episodes, and will be aimed at a young adult audience. Logical, since the series will be written by YA writer, Patrick Ness (of the Chaos Walking trilogy fame). Steven Moffat will be producing.

Anyway, here’s the main title sequence of American Horror Story: Hotel. Looks good, but it’s not as creepy as the other ones, in my opinion:

Oh hey, Zack Snyder and HBO have been talking about a Watchmen TV series. Just talking, mind. Nothing concrete. Still, I bet Alan Moore is thrilled about that. Not. Will it be just based in the original comicbook, or will some of the not-so-good prequel comicbooks make an appearance? As for the questions who watches the watchmen? Us, if Snyder and HBO manage to get some sort of agreement.

Also, it seems Spielbergs’ words about the end of times for the superhero genre still gets some answers all around the industry. This time is Kevin Feige’s, who doesn’t believe in superhero fatigue or even the superhero genre:

I think we’ve been doing pretty well. I’m very confident in the films we’ve announced that we have coming forward that they’re going to be surprising and different and unique. I’ve said a lot: I don’t believe in the comic book genre. I don’t believe in the superhero genre. I believe that each of our films can be very different.

FRIDAY

Thor: Ragnarok may have found its director in Taika Waititi. Yep, the dude who co-wrote and co-directed What We Do In the Shadows, is in negotiations to direct the third installment of Marvel’s Thor movies. And actually, that’s pretty fantastic! Dude also directed in Flight of the Conchords and wrote the script for Disney’s Moana! And he acted in both his movies. I wonder if he’ll have a smart on Thor: Ragnarok if he gets the job. Oh, I hope so!

There was a time where a Marvel comic called Damage Control existed, about the overworked, underpaid, clean up crew of the Marvel Universe. The comic comes and goes from time to time, and now it’s getting adapted as a single-camera comedy TV project by ABC. And I am liking the producing team already: Ben Karlin (“The Colbert Report,” “Modern Family”), David Miner (“Parks and Recreation,” “30 Rock”) and, well, Jeph Loeb (Marvel’s head of television). Damn, I am ready for this! I don’t care how much it sounds like DC’s own TV project, Powerless (about workers of an insurance company office that exists in the DC universe)!

Dreamworks Animation keeps working with Netflix, and now it brings us Mr. Peabody & Sherman Show! Here’s a synopsis of sorts:

The Mr. Peabody and Sherman Show presents the co-hosts interviewing a menagerie of historical figures, like George Washington and Edgar Allen Poe, as well as time traveling (as in their classic Jay Ward cartoons) via the WABAC machine to the days of history’s most prominent figures, who are bent on accomplishing anything but what they’re known for – if not for a little help from Peabody.

Yay for shows were kids learns stuff without realizing! The show debuts on Netflix October 9th!

Seems we will have Ghostbusters movies for years to come. Sony is not happy with having Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters and the supposedly all-male “counterpart”, now we are getting an animated feature! Well, get all the demographics, Sony! I mean, nobody should complain about ruined childhoods after that one, I hope?!

Finally on casting news, Jeremy Irons and Brendan Gleeson will be in Assassin’s Creed! Irons will play Marion Cotillard’s dad and Gleeson plays Michael Fassbender’s dad. Well damn, this videogame film adaptation sure is gearing up to be one of the good ones, not that it is hard to do considering how not-so-good are most of the others. I mean, check out that quality cast! OK, cast is not everything, but it’s a good indication I hope? They wouldn’t spend good money on these actors for a crappy movie, right? Let me dream, dammit!

And that’s it for the week. Before I go, I want to wish Happy Birthday to Jim Caviezel, Linda Hamilton, Gwyneth Paltrow, Naomi Watts, Zachary Levi, Julie Andrews, Fran Drescher and Marion Cotillard.
