The Fangirly Diary of a Geek Girl: A passion for animation~

THURSDAY

Marvel has brought us a new female superhero! And the comeback of a fairly old character~ Meet Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur! The latter is a Jack Kirby character from 1978, and back in the day the red T-Rex was hanging out with Moon-Boy, a young caveman. Now we have Moon Girl (real name: Lunella Lafayette), a genius preteen that discovers she’s an Inhuman… as it happens lately in Marvel. Creators say Moon-Boy will be there for a bit too. You know what? This is seriously adorable and could work as an animated series too! I hope it lasts! Because dinos are a girl’s best friend~

It’s been known that Fox planned to make a movie about the New Mutants, but we haven’t heard much about it. Because geeks are not known for their patience, the asked director Josh Boone via social media, what’s up with that? Boone, who’s also co-writer, shared a picture on Instagram of said script, where he claimed that the script is “not done yet but we have a lot of pages”. So just sit down and be patient, guys! It IS happening~

Jessica Jones is the second Netflix/Marvel collaboration that we’ll see after awesome Daredevil, and fans are eager to know more about it. Well, here’s executive producer Jeph Loeb talking about the show and how it differs from Daredevil:

When we first sat down and started talking about Daredevil, what we said was, for all intents and purposes, it was a crime drama first and a superhero show second. One of the things we’ve talked a lot about is that [Jessica Jones] is in many ways a psychological thriller first and then a superhero show second. […] In the same kind of way Vincent D’Onofrio owned his half of Daredevil, you’ll see David Tennant own his half of Jessica Jones.

For todays blast from the past we have a Fresh Prince reboot in development. And of course, Will Smith is the producer. Say what?! This is totally unnecesary, but most reboots are~ Apparently the idea is to put “a new spin on the fish-out-of-water tale while maintaining the spirit of Fresh Prince.” So what? Will’s spoiled kid who grew up in Bel-Air goes to Philadelphia? But that’s more a sequel than reboot. I just hope Jade Smith is not the protagonist. Poor kid didn’t inherit his dad’s charisma.

So CoverGirl has announced a Star Wars: The Force Awakens makeup line. You can buy online beginning September 4th (Force Friday) and in stores in mid-September. FRIDAY

There might have been others news this day but I care now! It’s D23 time! And while Disney encapsulated many franchises now, let’s not talk about MCU or Star Wars… instead let’s talk about all the awesome things Pixar and Disney Animation has for us! Here’s a pic with some of them:

As Alan Horn, Chairman of Walt Disney Studios, said:

This afternoon is all about animation. Everyone in this room shares a passion for animation, and for the characters and stories from the many beloved Disney and Pixar films. […] Animation is, of course, where this company began. It’s the core of our identity. And it’s stronger now than ever.

First, let’s talk about Moana, one of the things I am more excited about. Apparently it is made of awesome. So much awesome that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (who plays demi-god Maui) had so many feels he kinda cried. Also, the music is fantastic and made me kinda cry. Here’s the description of the snippets of the movie. And here are some pictures and videos of the panel presentation. BTW, since Maui seems like a South Pacific version of Thor what with his looks and him carrying around a Mjölnir-like mighty fish hook, I guess Fast & Furious 6 was totally right to nickname  Dwayne as “Samoan Thor”~

Continuing with Disney’s (and sometimes Pixar’s) tradition of “adjective” titles, we have Gigantic! It’s basically Jack and the Beanstalk, except it will take place in Spain, during the “age of discovery” (15th century!), where Jack makes a discovery above the ground and meets a 11 year-old girl named Ima. She’s 60 feet tall.

As for casting news, Shakira is now part of the Disney family. She will voice Gazelle, a, well, gazelle pop star in Zootopia. She will also perform the original song “Try Everything” for the film. As you can see in the image above, Gazelle’s hips also don’t lie~

As for Pixar’s annoucements, we have Coco, the previously untitled “Dia de los Muertos” film, coming to us from Toy Story 3‘s director/producer team. Lee Unkrich, who made us cry for toys, said Coco is “fun yet powerfully emotional”. So yeah, for tears in our future. The title of course comes from the Spanish equivalent of the Boogeyman. The main character is Miguel, “a spirited 12 year-old boy growing up with a big family in rural Mexico”, who discovers a generational mystery that “forever changes his fate”.

Talking about Toy Story 3, let’s talk Toy Story 4. Seems it will be a Woody and Bo Peep love story! And that comes from John Lasseter himself! I did wonder what happened to her since she wasn’t in Toy Story 3. He also added this:

At Pixar and at Disney, we only make sequels if we come up with a story that’s as good or better than the original. That’s our rule. We don’t do things just to print money.

I would believe, Lasseter, if it weren’t for freaking Cars 2… and now Cars 3! Yeah, you could see that poster among the ones from better awaited sequels (for me) like The Incredibles 2, Finding Dory, and even Toy Story 4. I just don’t like that franchise OK. I barely finished Cars, and Cars 2 remains the only Pixar movie I haven’t seen~

Finally, before D23, co-director Chris Buck talked a bit about Frozen 2, and how they will keep its “strong female leads” and “will tackle other issues that, I think, are out there today that boys and girls, men and women, are dealing with”. And that’s fine and dandy, except he also talked about his crazy head canon of Elsa and Anna’s parents and Tarzan’s parents being the same… you know, because Chris Buck also co-directer Tarzan. Head canon or not, things just doesn’t work up because both sets of parents don’t look alike (except for being white), and are from different countries (Arendelle and Arendelle) and time periods (1840-1850 and 1880s). Yes, I overthink things. Shut up!

And that’s it for the week. Before I go, I want to wish Happy Birthday to Gillian Anderson, Antonio Banderas, Chris Hemsworth, Viola Davis, Sebastian Stan and Mila Kunis.
